Boutique and heritage hotels in Pune

← Pune

Pune's unusual stays come in two kinds. Three sit in Koregaon Park, the leafy east-side district of the Osho resort: a 1920s Art Deco bungalow, a design hotel with a rooftop pool, and the resort's own guesthouse. The fourth is a real Maratha fort of 1710 near Saswad, outside the city. The choice is between walking out to cafes and bars or waking up inside old ramparts.

The stays, by kind

What each place is, from the list above and the hotels' own descriptions.

An Art Deco bungalow: Sunderban Resort & Spa

A bungalow built between 1924 and 1926 on land that was part of the Gaekwad estate of Baroda, now trading as Trance Sunderban Resort. Art Deco lines, teak woodwork that is polished rather than painted, original tiles and furniture, garden rooms, and a suite named for Osho, who lived here briefly in the 1970s. It is steps from the Osho campus and the cafes of North Main Road, and Dario's, a vegetarian Italian restaurant with an Art Deco bar, is in the grounds.

A design hotel: O Hotel Pune

One of Pune's original design hotels, in Koregaon Park, with interiors by the South African designer Les Harbottle, a rooftop pool and the Addah restaurant. Rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, wooden floors and free-standing tubs, and the neighbourhood's cafes and bars are right outside. Come for the look and the address rather than big-chain polish.

A meditation campus: OSHO International Meditation Resort

Not a classical ashram but a closed, carefully controlled spiritual resort, with meditations in air-conditioned halls and a guesthouse on the campus. A stay goes together with the resort's daily meditation passes. For some it is a spiritual destination, for others a questionable one; it suits those who come for the practice. Osho Teerth Park next door, a free bamboo-and-water garden, is open to anyone.

A Maratha fort: Fort JadhavGADH

A Maratha hill fort built in 1710 near Saswad, about 25 km from Pune, converted into a heritage resort that describes itself as the only one of its kind in Maharashtra. Inside the ramparts are Kholi Deluxe rooms, Chhavani tents and a Maharaja Suite, with regional Maharashtrian food and days of archery, pottery and fort walks; the hotel also runs the Aai Museum. A destination in itself, so plan an overnight escape rather than a city base.

Koregaon Park or out of town

Koregaon Park suits a city stay. It is pricier than the rest of Pune, but it is the district of the Osho gardens, the cafes and the city's best-known restaurants and bars, so evenings are on foot. For the old city and Shaniwar Wada you take a cab or a rickshaw to the metro (Ruby Hall Clinic or Kalyani Nagar stations).

Out of town suits a stay that is the trip. Besides JadhavGADH near Saswad, the list includes SaffronStays Satori, an eight-acre estate of luxury cottages with private infinity pools above Mulshi Lake, and The Hosteller Panshet, an adults-only backpacker base on the Mutha river 40–45 km out, near Panshet Dam. All three mean a drive, so plan them as destinations.

The old city itself has few rooms. For neighbourhoods, see where to stay in Pune.

When to book ahead

Book about a month ahead for Ganeshotsav (4–14 September 2027) and for the days the Wari palkhis halt in the city; during the Wari, hotels near Bhavani Peth, Nana Peth and Camp go first. For the Sawai Gandharva festival of Hindustani music, usually in December, book about six weeks ahead.

If none of these fits

For big-hotel comfort (the Ritz-Carlton, Conrad, JW Marriott and the Mulshi cottages) see luxury hotels in Pune; for hostels, including Zostel near the airport, see budget hotels in Pune.
