Vishnu temples in Mysore

विष्णु

Mysore belongs to the goddess on Chamundi Hill, but within roughly an hour's drive of the city stand three great temples of Vishnu, and each shows him in a different form: reclining on the serpent at Srirangapatna (15 km), carved in stone at Somanathapura (36 km) and crowned with diamonds at Melukote (51 km). None is in the city itself, so treat them as half-day or day trips. For the city's own temples see the [Mysore temples page](/en/mysore/temples/).

Vishnu

One god, three forms

Vishnu is the preserver of the world: when dharma weakens, he descends as an avatar, Rama and Krishna among the ten. Around Mysore his worship runs deep because of Ramanuja, the 12th-century teacher of the Sri Vaishnava tradition, who lived at Melukote for over a decade. The three temples on the list are three ways of seeing the same god. At Srirangapatna he lies on the coils of a serpent as Ranganatha. At Somanathapura three shrines were built for Keshava, Janardhana and Venugopala, Krishna playing the flute (the Keshava image itself is lost). At Melukote he is Cheluvanarayana, also called Tirunarayana, and on the hilltop above he is Yoganarasimha, a form of Narasimha, the man-lion avatar. More about Vishnu: Vishnu.

The three temples and what makes each different

Sri Ranganathaswamy, Srirangapatna (~15 km): a working pilgrimage temple

The island town on the Kaveri took its name from this temple, consecrated around 984 and enlarged by the Hoysalas, Vijayanagara and the Wodeyars. In the sanctum Vishnu reclines on the seven-hooded serpent Adishesha with Lakshmi at his feet. He is Adi Ranga, the first of the five Ranganatha shrines strung along the Kaveri, with the last at Srirangam in Tamil Nadu. Pilgrims bathe at the river ghats before darshan. Free; Karnataka Tourism gives 7:00–13:30 and 16:00–20:30. More: Ranganathaswamy Temple.

Keshava Temple, Somanathapura (~36 km): Vishnu in stone

Consecrated in 1258 (some sources give 1268), the high point of Hoysala carving: three shrines on one star-shaped plan, and a cloister around them carved without a gap, rows of elephants, scenes from the epics, ranks of deities. Worship ended here long ago; the ASI keeps it as a monument, and since 2023 it is part of UNESCO's Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas. That makes it the one Vishnu temple on the list where you can look as long as you like. Ticketed, with a higher rate for foreign nationals.

Melukote (~51 km): Ramanuja's hill town

Not one temple but a small town on a hill, a thousand years old. Below is the Cheluvanarayana Swamy temple, closely tied to Ramanuja and to the Mysore kings, who presented jewelled crowns to it; the diamond crown, the Vairamudi, is kept in the Mandya treasury and brought up under escort for its festival. A long stair climbs to the Yoganarasimha temple on the summit, with the Mandya plains below. Between them lies the Kalyani, a great stepped tank. Shoes off at the temples.

Vairamudi: the night of the diamond crown

The biggest Vishnu festival around Mysore is not in the city. Once a year, within a 13-day Brahmotsavam at Melukote, the Vairamudi, the diamond crown, comes up from the treasury under escort and is placed on Cheluvanarayana at night; the crowned deity is then carried around the town until about dawn, watched for free by a crowd in the hundreds of thousands. By tradition the priest who fixes the crown may not look at it. In 2027 the Vairamudi night is expected on 18 March (Brahmotsavam 13–25 March, projected). Rooms are in Mysuru or Mandya, and the night is an excursion: see Vairamudi Brahmotsavam.

✅ Planning the trips

  • Srirangapatna as a half day — The temple stands inside the island fort, so it pairs naturally with the Tipu Sultan sites of Srirangapatna. Karnataka Tourism suggests weekdays to avoid the crowds.
  • Somanathapura in daylight — Carving is the reason to come, so arrive in good light. The monument keeps roughly 8:30–17:30 hours.
  • Melukote as a full day — Leave time for both temples, the stairs to the summit and the old agrahara lanes, the old Brahmin quarter.
  • Dress — Srirangapatna and Melukote are working temples: modest clothes, shoes off at the gate. Karnataka Tourism lists shirt and trousers or a dhoti for men, and a sari, half-sari or salwar suit for women, at Srirangapatna.
  • Vishnu inside the city — Mysore Palace fort holds several Vishnu shrines of the royal family, Sri Lakshmiramana Swami among them, with an inscription of 1499; see the Mysore temples page and Mysore Palace.
