Gokulam, Mysore
The Ashtanga Quarter
Gokulam is the leafy residential quarter in the north-west of Mysore where people come for months of ashtanga yoga in the lineage of K. Pattabhi Jois. Its streets are quiet, its days start before dawn, and it has a cluster of work-friendly cafes, so it suits a slow morning even without a mat.

Why Gokulam
Pattabhi Jois founded the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in 1948 at his home in Lakshmipuram, in Mysore. In 2002 a new school opened in Gokulam to make room for the growing number of students. Today the area has rooms and flats let by the month, hostels, shalas (yoga schools) with attached rooms and kitchens that cook healthy and vegetarian.

Most of these are vegetarian; more detail on cafes in Mysore.
- After practice
Chakra House Cafe opens early, with communal tables, floor cushions, no background music and dependable wifi. SAPA Sourdough & Pastry, founded by German baker Dina Weber, mills much of its own flour for sourdough and pastry.
- Working hours
Depth N Green is the default laptop cafe, with Blue Tokai espresso, power points, bowls and parathas; service slows when it is full. White Teak Coffee Roasters on Gokulam Main Road roasts its own beans in a cane-furnished garden and costs a little more than the neighbourhood norm.
- Lunch
Old Green House Cafe will make almost any dish dairy-free on request (coconut milk for cow's milk, oil for ghee, tofu for paneer); it is cash only. Nalpak, a local pure-veg chain, is the dependable choice for a masala dosa or a thali.
- Evening
Gokulam goes to bed early, because practitioners rise before dawn. Depth N Green fires its wood oven for pizza at night; for the palace lights and the bazaar, head to the palace and Devaraja area.
Staying in Gokulam and getting around
Rooms and flats here follow the shalas' monthly rhythm. Palace Hostel by Borrbo is a heritage-style house with dorms, a shared kitchen and a rooftop used for morning practice (it is fan-cooled, so warm in peak summer); Mysore Mandala Yogashala pairs simple rooms with daily Mysore-style practice. Gokulam is 3–5 km north-west of the palace, about fifteen minutes by rickshaw; for daily trips to the centre or to Chamundi Hill you will want wheels, see getting around Mysore. During Dasara (11–21 October 2026) it is a good base: close to the centre but outside the roads closed on procession day. Mysore is comfortable year-round, most of all from October to February. For a dawn walk, Kukkarahalli Lake on the university campus, west of the centre, has a shaded 4.5 km track.
