Where to stay in Murudeshwar

← Murudeshwar

In Murudeshwar the temple, the beach and almost all the hotels sit on one headland, so the main choice is distance from the temple. Stay inside the complex or on Temple Road for early darshan, on the town beach for the view of the statue, or in Mavalli and the homestays along the shore for quiet.

Where to stay in Murudeshwar: the areas

Murudeshwar is small, and the choice is really how close to the temple you want to sleep and how much quiet you want in exchange.

Inside the temple complex

The temple trust's Bhakta Nivas sits in the grounds beside the gopuram, about as close to the deity as you can sleep: plain rooms for pilgrims, booked largely offline and on the spot. The RNS Guest House is in an enclosed compound right behind the temple, with many rooms facing the sea.

Temple Road

The lane up to the Raja Gopura, with the market stalls; the KSRTC bus stand is nearby. Kamath Yatri Nivas is the long-running pilgrim lodge here: vegetarian, plain and practical for families and groups.

On the town beach

Guest houses and hotels along the sand with the statue and the temple in view: Blue Pearl, Aryana Sea View, Coral Beach Cottage, Amani Beach Homestay, Naveen Beach Resort about 50 m from the water, and RNS Residency, the most polished hotel in town. You walk to darshan in the morning and to the beach at sunset.

Mavalli and the quieter edges

Homestays set back from the temple crowds: Coastal Pearl near Mavalli with hill views, the larger Mavalli Sea House facing the sea, and Madhuvijaya, an apartment-style homestay about 1.2 km from the temple and beach. Better for slower stays and families who want home cooking.

Further along the shore

Nestle Sahyadri, family-run cottages directly on the shoreline in the Tuddalli Bailur area, a short hop from the temple; and the RNS Golf Resort, a short drive from town, with a pool, golf course, nature-cure centre and private beach access, for space rather than the pilgrim bustle.

How to choose

For darshan at dawn, stay inside the complex or on Temple Road: no transport, and you are at the gate before the tour buses.

For the view, pick a sea-facing room on the town beach or at the RNS Guest House behind the temple; ask specifically for a sea-view room when you book.

For quiet, Mavalli, the homestays further along the shore or the golf resort. You trade the walk to the temple for a calmer night.

Food and drink. Murudeshwar is a temple town. RNS Residency, the RNS Guest House and Kamath Yatri Nivas are strictly vegetarian, and both RNS hotels in town are alcohol-free. Most of the homestays named here provide meals.

Arriving by train. Murdeshwar station is 2 km from the temple and there are almost no rickshaws after dark, so book a place you can reach in daylight or ask the hotel about a pickup. See the railway station page.

Shivaratri and festival nights

On Maha Shivaratri (6 March 2027) the town fills for the all-night vigil, and the hotels closest to the temple go first. Karnataka Tourism advises booking four to six weeks ahead; arrive by the afternoon and expect higher rates. The temple trust's rooms also tighten sharply around Kartik Purnima (24 November 2026). If Murudeshwar is full, Bhatkal, the taluk town about 16 km south, is the fallback.

Do you need to stay at all?

Many visitors don't: Murudeshwar sits on the Goa–Gokarna–Udupi line, and a few hours between two trains cover the temple, the gopura lift and the beach. A night makes sense for an early darshan, for sunset on the beach without watching the clock, or for a boat to Netrani Island in the morning.
