Murudeshwar railway station
Murudeshwar has its own station, Murdeshwar (code MRDW), on the Konkan Railway, about 2 km from the temple: a short rickshaw ride or a 20–30 minute walk. A daily express from Bengaluru ends here, and some Konkan line expresses between Mumbai, Goa and Mangaluru stop on the way; the Vande Bharat and the Madgaon–Mangaluru Intercity do not. Buses stop in the town, not at the station.
Murdeshwar station (MRDW)
A Konkan Railway halt with four or five trains a day. The statue is visible from the platform, which is why people assume it is next door, but it is a 2 km walk or a short rickshaw ride.
Best option
Buses along the coast road
Buses stop in the town rather than at the station, but the coast road is slow: from Goa this is a whole day, not a morning.
Murdeshwar station (MRDW)
The station is spelled Murdeshwar on tickets and timetables, code MRDW. It is a small stop on the Konkan Railway, the line along the west coast between Mumbai and Mangaluru, with two platforms; the neighbouring stations are Manki to the north and Chitrapur to the south. It is not a junction: no other line branches off here.
The statue is visible from the platform, which is why people assume the temple is next door. It is about 2 km away, a short rickshaw ride or a 20–30 minute walk downhill to the sea.
Trains that stop here
From Bengaluru. The daily 16585/16586 express runs between SMVT Bengaluru and Murdeshwar via Mysuru, Hassan and Mangaluru, and Murdeshwar is its terminus. North of Mangaluru it also calls at Surathkal, Mulki, Udupi, Barkur, Kundapura, Mookambika Road Byndoor and Bhatkal. In the current timetable the train from Bengaluru leaves in the evening and arrives in the early afternoon of the next day; the return leaves in the afternoon and reaches Bengaluru the next morning.
From Goa and Mangaluru. Not every train on the Konkan line stops here. The daily Matsyagandha Express (12619/12620, Mumbai LTT–Mangaluru Central) does; from Madgaon the 155 km take about 2–3 hours, from approximately ₹85 in a seating class to about ₹1,200 in AC. The Mangaluru–Madgaon Vande Bharat (20645/20646) stops only at Udupi and Karwar, and the Madgaon–Mangaluru Intercity (22635/22636) stops at Bhatkal and Kumta but not at Murdeshwar.
Times change: check the current timetable on IRCTC or the NTES app before you travel.
From the station to the temple
The last 2 km.
- By rickshaw
About 5 minutes and roughly ₹50–100. For daytime trains, drivers wait outside the entrance.
- On foot
20–30 minutes down to the sea, easy with light luggage. Everything in town, from the temple to the guesthouses, is then on one headland.
- After dark
Almost no rickshaws wait for late trains and the road is unlit. Plan to arrive in daylight, or arrange a pickup with your hotel.
Murudeshwar bus stand
Buses stop in the town itself, not at the railway station. The KSRTC bus stand is close to Temple Road, a short walk from the temple. From Mangaluru frequent buses take about 3–4 hours, from approximately ₹150. From Panaji in Goa private and state coaches on NH-66 take 6.5–7 hours, at approximately ₹650–1,600, so the train is much faster on that stretch. More options are on the how to get there page.
A stop between two trains
Murudeshwar sits on the Goa–Gokarna–Udupi line, and a few hours here between two trains is enough for the temple, the gopura lift and the beach. Karnataka Tourism notes "Pink Bubble" safe waiting spaces for women at the station. Little English is spoken here, so a translation app helps.
