How to reach Murudeshwar

← Murudeshwar

The easiest way to reach Murudeshwar is the train: the town has its own Konkan Railway halt, Murdeshwar (MRDW), about 2 km from the temple. From Madgaon in Goa the train takes about 2.5–3 hours, against 6.5–7 by bus. The nearest airport is Mangaluru, about 165 km south, so most journeys by air end with a train or a bus up the coast.

Murdeshwar station (MRDW)

A Konkan Railway halt with four or five trains a day. The statue is visible from the platform, which is why people assume it is next door, but it is a 2 km walk or a short rickshaw ride.

Best option

Buses along the coast road

Buses stop in the town rather than at the station, but the coast road is slow: from Goa this is a whole day, not a morning.

By train

Murdeshwar station (MRDW) is a small Konkan Railway halt where about a dozen trains a day stop, by the Konkan Railway timetable. From Madgaon (Goa) it is 155 km down the coast, about 2.5–3 hours, from about ₹85 in a seating class to about ₹1,200 in AC. From Mangaluru the Matsyagandha Express and the Madgaon MEMU and passenger trains stop here; the Madgaon–Mangaluru Vande Bharat does not (it stops only at Karwar and Udupi).

The statue is visible from the platform, which is why it looks next door, but it is 2 km away: about 5 minutes by auto-rickshaw (about ₹50–100) or 20–30 minutes on foot. Drivers wait outside for daytime trains. More on the station page.

Do not plan a late arrival

After dark there are almost no rickshaws at the station, and the 2 km to the temple is an unlit road. Choose a train that arrives in daylight.

By bus

Buses run along the coast road, NH-66, and stop in the town itself rather than at the station. From Mangaluru there are frequent buses all day, about 3–4 hours, from about ₹150. From Panaji (Goa) private and state coaches take about 6.5–7 hours for about ₹650–1,600, longer than most people expect: the train covers the same coast in about 2.5–3 hours.

By air

The nearest airport is Mangaluru International, about 165 km away; Hubballi airport, about 200 km away, is an alternative from the north. From either, the onward options are a taxi or a bus, and from Mangaluru also the train up the Konkan line.

It works best as a stop

Murudeshwar sits neatly on the Goa–Gokarna–Udupi line, and a few hours here between two trains is the natural length of a visit. Once you arrive, the temple, the gopura, the beach and the guesthouses are all on one headland and within walking distance; see getting around.
