Murudeshwar weather by season

Long-term averages for the weather station at nearby Shirali; the month-by-month table is above.

November to February: dry and warm

Daytime highs of 33–34 °C, nights of 20–23 °C, almost no rain and humidity around 70%. The sea is open and this is the best time to come.

March to May: hot and humid

Highs climb to 35 °C in April and May and nights stay at 25–26 °C. The first storms arrive in May, with about 145 mm of rain, and the sea is already rough from April.

June to September: the monsoon

The rain is heavy: about 1,056 mm in June, 1,248 mm over 28 rainy days in July and 937 mm in August. Highs drop to 29–31 °C, humidity reaches 93%, and the sea is closed.

October: the turn

What the weather means for your plans

Sea and beach. Swimming is possible roughly from November to March; April, May and October bring rough water, and from June to September the sea is closed. The town beach has been closed after drownings, so the calendar is a guide, not a promise. More on the beaches page.

Netrani. Dive and snorkel trips to Netrani Island run from October to May and stop through the monsoon; trips are also cancelled whenever the coast guard closes the sea.

Waterfalls. Jog Falls, about 90 km inland, runs strongest from July to October, during and just after the monsoon, depending on releases from the dam upstream. The small fall at Apsarakonda flows only from June to October.

Monsoon days out. Boats to the Basavaraja Durga island fort do not run in the monsoon, and the climb to the Ottinene viewpoint turns slippery. The temple itself is open all year.

What to pack

The heat is steady all year, so the list changes mostly with the rain.

  • Light, covering clothes — Loose cotton that also works for the temple: the sanctum asks for a dhoti or formal trousers for men and a saree or chudidar with dupatta for women. See the dress code page.
  • Sun cover — Highs do not drop below 29 °C even in the monsoon. A hat, sunscreen and water for the open headland and the beach.
  • Rain gear, June to September — An umbrella or rain jacket and sandals that can get wet; from June to August there are more than 20 rainy days a month.
  • Torch — For any sunset viewpoint outside town and for the unlit road from the station.
