Places to visit near Murudeshwar

← Murudeshwar

The best places to visit near Murudeshwar lie along a short stretch of coast. Honnavar's beach, mangrove boardwalk and island fort are 20–35 km north; Bhatkal's 16th-century temples are 16 km south; the Netrani reef is 19 km offshore; Jog Falls is about 120 km inland by Karnataka Tourism's count. Gokarna and Udupi, further along the coast, are towns of their own and worth a night each.

Gokarna

A Karnataka temple town that doubles as a quieter Goa: pilgrims fill the ancient Mahabaleshwar shrine while a cliff path links half-moon beaches named Om and Paradise. Empty sands, sunset walks and a slower coast: Goa without the crowds.

~55 km as the crow flies

Udupi

A small coastal town with an outsized culinary shadow: the Udupi restaurants found all over India take their name and their vegetarian repertoire from here. At its centre is the 13th-century Krishna Matha, where the deity is seen through a silver-plated window and eight monasteries take turns running the temple.

~90 km as the crow flies

Goa

India's easiest, sunniest escape: a beach for every mood, buzzing markets, Portuguese forts and churches, and a coastal pace that asks nothing of you. Party up north, slow down south: the gentlest way to fall for India.

~170 km as the crow flies

Hampi

The ghost capital of the Vijayanagara empire, strewn across a boulder moonscape on the Tungabhadra: temples, bazaars and a famous stone chariot left mid-sentence five centuries ago. One of India's most spectacular ruins, with boulder-top sunsets over the whole vanished city.

~250 km as the crow flies

North: the Honnavar coast (20–35 km)

The richest direction, around the mouth of the Sharavathi river. The first two pair naturally in one morning.

Sharavathi mangrove boardwalk (about 22 km)

A raised wooden walkway of about 1.5 km straight into the mangroves of the estuary, ending on a deck over an island in the forest. Entry about ₹20. Come early for the birds and carry repellent. Details.

Kasarkod Eco Beach (about 20 km)

Five kilometres of sand opposite the boardwalk, with Blue Flag certification and an open western horizon; calmer than the town beach and best in the last hour of light. A commercial port is being built next to it, and the shoreline is changing.

Apsarakonda (about 16–20 km)

A small waterfall in a park, a viewpoint over the sea, a quiet beach, the Pandava caves and two small shrines, all within one short walk. The fall runs only from the monsoon into October. See waterfalls.

Idagunji Mahaganapathi (35 km by Karnataka Tourism)

One of the busiest Ganesha temples in Karnataka, around a million pilgrims a year, for a granite image dated to about the 4th–5th century. See temples.

Basavaraja Durga island fort (about 35 km)

Ruined 16th-century Vijayanagara ramparts on a wooded island where the Sharavathi meets the sea. Reached only by boat from Pavinakurve or Honnavar, October to May, in fair weather. There are no facilities at all: carry water and sun cover.

South: Bhatkal (16 km) and Ottinene

Bhatkal was the main west-coast port of the Vijayanagara empire, and the merchant money of that century is still standing in stone. The Khetapai Narayana temple (1546) has a sloping stone roof, pierced screens and Ramayana panels, and is usually empty though it stands right off the highway. The Chandranatheshwara Basadi, the town's largest Jain temple, has a two-tiered slab roof and a free-standing lamp column. Stay for lunch: Bhatkali biryani is the wedding dish of the town's Nawayath community, cooked with a green chilli and onion masala in mutton, chicken, beef, fish, prawn, crab and vegetable versions, so ask which is on that day.

Further south, past Bhatkal, the Ottinene viewpoint near Byndoor (about 30 km) is a cliff over the mouth of the Byndoor river, climbed for the sunset over open water. Carry a torch for the way down; in heavy monsoon the rock is slippery.

Out to sea: Netrani Island (19 km)

A heart-shaped basalt island ringed by a coral reef, an hour's open-sea crossing each way from Murudeshwar beach. You cannot land: the navy uses it as a firing range, so everything happens from the anchored boat. Introductory dives take non-swimmers with an instructor (about ₹5,000 at Dive Netrani's rates; certification courses about ₹22,000–28,000), and snorkelling is the option for anyone not diving. The season is October to May; book a day or more ahead, and expect cancellations whenever the coast guard closes the sea. Netrani page.

Inland: Jog Falls (about 120 km)

The Sharavathi drops about 250 metres off the plateau in four streams, the highest single drop in India. It is a long drive up into the ghats, so it is a full day, and it is worth it only during and just after the monsoon, when releases from the dam upstream keep it full; Karnataka Tourism names September to November as the best time. Jog Falls.

Further along the coast: Gokarna and Udupi

Gokarna is about 55 km north in a straight line and about 78 km by road, an hour and a half to two hours: a temple town around the Mahabaleshwar shrine, where the other half of the Atmalinga legend is set, with beaches along a cliff path. Udupi, about 90 km south in a straight line, has the Krishna Matha and the vegetarian cooking that gave its name to restaurants all over India. Both sit on the same Konkan coast as Murudeshwar, and both deserve a night rather than a day trip.
