Best time to visit Murudeshwar
The best time to visit Murudeshwar is November to February: almost no rain, days around 33–34°C and the sea open for boats to Netrani Island. October, March and April work with caveats. May to August are the months to avoid: July alone brings about 1,250 mm of rain, and from June to September the sea is closed.

Shiva by the sea + Netrani diving Oct–May
Jun–Sep: diving closed, beach closures after drownings
Season by season
November to February (best). Dry: from December to February rainfall is close to zero. Days are 33–34°C, nights 20–23°C, humidity around 70%. The sea is open, every boat to Netrani runs, and December to February is the clearest water for diving. This is also when the town is fullest, especially around Diwali, Christmas and New Year.
March and April (good, but hot). 34–35°C by day and stickier. The sea is still open in March and turns rough in April. Mornings are manageable and the crowds thin out.
May (avoid). The hottest month at 35°C, with nights at 26°C and pre-monsoon storms starting (about 145 mm). The sea is rough.
June to September (monsoon). About 1,056 mm in June, 1,248 mm in July, 937 mm in August and 425 mm in September; humidity reaches 93%. The sea is closed, diving stops, and the beach has been closed after drownings. The temple stays open, the coast turns green and the waterfalls run.
October (good). Rain drops to about 219 mm, the diving season opens, but the sea is still rough at times.
Best time for what
The answer depends on why you are coming.
Temple and statue
Any month. Come in the morning before the tour buses for darshan, and in the late afternoon for the view from the gopura towards sunset. The monsoon months are the quietest.
Diving at Netrani
October to May; nothing goes out in the monsoon. The clearest water is in mid-winter. See the Netrani page.
Waterfalls
July to October, when Jog Falls runs at full strength; September and October balance water and weather. See waterfalls.
Olive ridley turtles
Nesting at Kasarkod from December to April, peaking roughly December to February. Port construction next to the beach has disrupted nesting, so ask at the Honnavar forest range office before planning around it.
Yakshagana
The night-long dance-drama of coastal Karnataka is staged mainly from about November to May, after the harvest.
Maha Shivaratri
The one date that changes the town is Maha Shivaratri (6 March 2027). The temple complex fills from the evening, the statue stays floodlit and the poojas (offerings) run through to morning. Book a room weeks ahead, since the hotels nearest the temple fill first, and arrive by the afternoon; Bhatkal, to the south, is the fallback for a bed.
The sea is not a swimming beach
Even in season Murudeshwar beach is not really meant for swimming: the waves are strong and the beach is busy with buses and vendors. From June to September the sea is closed altogether, and the beach has been shut after drownings. Check the weather page for a single month.
