Where to stay in Munnar
The real choice in Munnar is not the hotel but the distance from town. Stay in the town and you walk to the bus stand, the bazaar and dinner; stay out in the valleys or on a tea estate and you get silence and views, but every trip starts with a car on a winding road. The hotels in the list above fall into four groups.

Four areas, four kinds of stay
From the town outwards.
Munnar town: for buses, food and walking
The KSRTC bus stand, the Main Bazaar, the restaurants and both churches are a walk apart. Small family homestays such as Carmel Homestay sit within walking distance of the centre. The right base without a car, or for a short stay that leans on buses and rickshaws.
Pallivasal, Attukad and Chithirapuram: valley resorts
About 8–10 km from town on the Pallivasal side: Parakkat Nature Resort and Rivulet Retreat in Pallivasal, Blanket Hotel & Spa near Attukad, The Leaf in Chithirapuram. Resort scale and valley views, with a pool and spa at Blanket and included activities at Parakkat; Attukad Waterfalls, the Punarjani theatre and the Spice Palace garden are nearby. Comfortable for families, but you will use taxis for town.
Tea estates: planters' bungalows and small boutiques
Stays inside working plantations: Gruenberg Tea Plantation Haus, five rooms about 5 km from town; amã Stays & Trails, restored planters' bungalows in the Kanan Devan Hills, booked whole; Windermere Estate, 18 rooms on a 60-acre plantation, a good base for Eravikulam. For quiet, history and early walks in the tea.
Chinnakanal and further out: the quiet end
About half an hour from town in Chinnakanal, SpiceTree Munnar has 14 suites and two pool villas; Anayirankal reservoir and the Lockhart Gap road are beyond. The Hosteller, a hostel on terraced tea hills, is about 45 minutes out. Far from the bazaar by design: you will want a vehicle.
How to choose
- No car, short stay: the town. Buses to Top Station and Mattupetty and the rickshaw stand are in the centre.
- Family with luggage: a valley resort near Pallivasal or Attukad, with a taxi booked from Kochi airport door to door.
- Couples and slow travel: a tea-estate bungalow or Chinnakanal, with a car for the day when you go out.
- Backpackers: a homestay in town, or the hostel if you have your own wheels.
By price: budget hotels, boutique hotels and luxury hotels in Munnar.
Staying out of town: roads after dark
Hill roads around Munnar are unlit, and on the estate roads elephants also move at night, which is why traffic slows after dark. If your stay is out of town, arrive before dark and plan dinner where you sleep. In the monsoon, especially June to August, landslides can close stretches of the Gap Road.
Pack for cold nights
Munnar sits at about 1,600 m: average night temperatures are around 13–14 °C from December to February. Estate bungalows with fireplaces make sense here.
