Luxury hotels in Munnar
Luxury in Munnar comes in two forms. One is the full-service 5-star resort with a pool, a spa and a valley view; the other is a small stay inside a working plantation, from a five-room boutique house to a whole planter's bungalow. Choose the location first: on these hill roads, where the hotel stands decides how much of each day goes on driving.

Five ways to stay at the top end
The two 5-star resorts are in the list below with booking links; the estate stays are upscale alternatives rather than star-rated hotels.
Full-service 5-star near town: Blanket Hotel & Spa
Near Attukad, with 42 valley-view rooms, an outdoor pool and a full spa, plus organised extras such as high tea, live cooking demonstrations and evening snacks. The pick if you want comfort and a spa rather than seclusion, and it sits closer to town than the plantation retreats.
Boutique 5-star retreat: SpiceTree Munnar
In Chinnakanal, about half an hour from town: 14 suites and two private pool villas fed by mountain spring water, and a heated infinity pool over the valley. Solar power, organic farming and no plastic bottles; tea tastings, gentle treks, yoga and Ayurvedic treatments are arranged on site. A quiet, private choice for couples.
A whole planter's bungalow: amã Stays & Trails
Original tea planters' bungalows in the Kanan Devan Hills, restored and run by IHCL, the Taj group, under its amã Stays & Trails brand: Kadalaar, Madupatty and the 90-year-old Kanniamallay among them. You book the whole house, with a private kitchen and a fireplace, and guided plantation walks and tastings are on hand. Best for families or small groups.
A pioneer estate retreat: Windermere Estate
Open to travellers since 1995: 18 rooms on a 60-acre cardamom, coffee and tea estate, with home-cooked meals served in the barn. Book a cottage rather than a farmhouse room for the valley view; it works well as a base for Eravikulam National Park.
Five rooms in the tea: Gruenberg Tea Plantation Haus
A small modern boutique house inside a working tea estate about 5 km from town, with glass windows and balconies onto the slopes and a rooftop terrace where breakfast and dinner are served. Ask for a top-floor room for the best view of the estate.
Which area: town, Pallivasal side or Chinnakanal
Near town and on the Pallivasal side (Attukad, Chithirapuram, Pallivasal), within roughly 10 km of the centre, you are closest to the bazaar, the Tea Museum and the Kochi road; Blanket is near Attukad, and Gruenberg's estate is about 5 km from town. Chinnakanal, about half an hour east, is quieter, on the way to Lockhart Gap and Anayirankal, but every trip to the Top Station road or to town is a drive. The Kanan Devan estates, such as Madupatty on the Top Station road, put you among working tea, close to Mattupetty and Kundala. Mid-range and budget options are on the where to stay page.
Before you book
Things that matter more in Munnar than in a city hotel.
- Plan the arrival — From Kochi airport (COK) it is about 110 km of hill road, roughly 3.5–4.5 hours by car. Roads are unlit at night, so aim to arrive before dark, especially at an estate or in Chinnakanal.
- Ask for the valley view — Views decide the stay here; when booking, ask for a valley-view room, a cottage, or the top floor.
- Mind the monsoon — From June to August landslides close stretches of the Gap Road and night driving can be banned in heavy rain; October to February is the clear season.
- Cold nights in winter — In late December and January the estate valleys can drop to around zero at night, which is when a fireplace earns its keep.
- Meals in-house — Out-of-town retreats are far from restaurants, so check what meals are included before you book.
