Churches in Munnar
Munnar has two churches worth the short walk from the town centre, and both grew out of the tea estates. CSI Christ Church is a small stone Gothic chapel from 1910, built by the British planters and still a working parish. Mount Carmel began in 1898 as a shed for plantation workers and is now a minor basilica. Here is what each one holds and when to come.

CSI Christ Church: the planters' chapel
CSI Christ Church was built in 1910 by the British planter community of the High Range. The planter Henry Mansfield Knight paid for it in memory of his wife, Eleanor Isabel, which is where the chapel's quiet love-story reputation comes from. It was Anglican and passed to the Church of South India (CSI), a united Protestant church, after the colonial era.
Inside, the original stained glass, period chandeliers and brass plaques to High Range planters have all survived. Visitors are welcome roughly from 9:00 to 17:00, outside service times (Incredible India).
Mount Carmel: from a shed to a basilica
Mount Carmel stands on a hill near the bus stand, a white building with a cross that is easy to see from the road and an easy walk from the market. Its story starts in 1898, when the Spanish Carmelite missionary Fr Alphonse Maria de los Angeles reached Munnar on foot, received land from the estate managers and said Mass in a shed of wood and straw for the plantation workers. A small church followed in 1909; the foundation stone of the present church was laid in 1934 and it was blessed in 1938. Fr Alphonse, who died of malaria in 1916, is buried inside. The parish counts itself the first Catholic church of the High Range, and the Vatican has since raised it to a minor basilica.
Sunday morning Mass is in Malayalam, and visitors who come quietly are welcome to attend.
