Meditation in Mumbai: where to sit, from ten minutes to ten days
The easiest way to meditate in Mumbai is free and takes ten minutes: at the Global Vipassana Pagoda in Gorai anyone can be taught Anapana, simple attention to the breath, in a hall beside the great dome. If that leads somewhere, the same tradition runs residential 10-day Vipassana courses on the pagoda campus and at Dhamma Giri in Igatpuri, by donation only and in strict silence.
Ten minutes of Anapana
Under the largest pillarless stone dome in the world, next to relics of the Buddha, anyone can be taught Anapana, the first step of Vipassana, which is simply watching the breath. It takes ten minutes, it costs nothing, and no one asks you to believe anything. The main hall under the dome is kept for people who have done the ten-day course; everyone else sits in the north pagoda.
Open daily 09:00–19:00, last entry 18:30. Anapana runs continuously from 10:00 to 18:30 at the north pagoda. Free.
Ten minutes of Anapana at the pagoda
The Global Vipassana Pagoda is built around the largest pillarless stone dome in the world, next to relics of the Buddha. Anapana, the first step of Vipassana, is taught to visitors in the North Pagoda, opposite the visitors' gallery, continuously from 10:00 to 18:30. It is free, open to anyone fit and over ten, and no one asks you to believe anything. You follow recorded instructions and stay seated until the session ends; men and women sit in separate areas.
The main hall under the dome is kept for people who have completed a 10-day course; other visitors see it from the gallery. The pagoda is open daily from 9:00 to 19:00, and entry and guided tours are free.

10-day Vipassana courses
The ten-day course in the tradition taught by S. N. Goenka is the introduction to Vipassana proper. In Mumbai it is run at Dhamma Pattana, inside the pagoda campus in Gorai, where most courses are geared towards business executives and professionals, and executives are given preference. The large centre is Dhamma Giri in Igatpuri, about three hours from Mumbai by car, described as one of the world's largest Vipassana centres; it held its first course in 1976. At both, instructions are given in Hindi and English unless stated otherwise.
You apply online through the course schedule, read the introduction and code of discipline, and wait for a reply by email, which can take up to two weeks; if accepted, confirm your place. Only confirmed students and servers may enter the Igatpuri centre. The 10-day course actually spans 12 days with arrival and departure.
The rules of a 10-day course
What the official code of discipline asks.
Noble silence
Silence of body, speech and mind from the start of the course until the morning of the last full day: no talking, gestures or notes with other students. You may speak to the teacher and the management.
Five precepts
No killing, stealing, sexual activity, lying or intoxicants for the whole course.
The day
The wake-up bell rings at 4:00 and lights go out at 21:30. You commit to staying the full course.
Cost
No fee. Courses run on donations, accepted only from people who have completed a course, so first-time students give, if they wish, at the end. Teachers are not paid.
Other quiet places in the city
Not every practice needs a course. Banganga Tank on Malabar Hill, a stone tank of 1127 ringed with steps and small temples, is used rather than looked at early in the morning. At ISKCON Juhu the aarti times are the moments to come, with singing and lamps, and the marble courtyard is a calm pocket in a loud part of the city. Govardhan Ecovillage, a few hours from Mumbai, combines spiritual practice, sustainable living and agrotourism in a rural setting. For postures rather than stillness, see Yoga in Mumbai.
