Things to do in Kochi in the evening
Kochi's evening is short and good: sunset by the water, a Kathakali or kalari show, and a long dinner. Nightlife in the club sense is thin, and the ferries across the harbour stop by about 9 pm, so plan the evening around them. Here are the sunset spots, the shows and their times, where to eat and drink, and how to get back.

Where to watch the sunset
Kochi's evening starts an hour before dark, on the water. More spots: sunset points in Kochi.
The Chinese nets, Fort Kochi
The nets are worked in the morning and the early evening, when the tide runs: four or five people walk a rope down and a twenty-metre net rises out of the harbour mouth against the sunset. Watching is free; crews sometimes let you take a rope for about ₹100–200. Chinese fishing nets
Marine Drive, Ernakulam
A 3 km promenade along the backwaters, closed to cars, where the city comes to walk in the evening. The arched Rainbow Bridge is lit up at night, and boats leave from the walkway for evening cruises on the lake.
Puthuvype Lighthouse beach
A low-key local beach under Kerala's tallest lighthouse, about ten minutes from the Fort Kochi–Vypin ferry. People drift down for the sunset.
Kadamakkudy Islands
Fourteen backwater islands about 15 km out, with flooded paddy fields that catch the last light. A scooter or car toward Pizhala, stopping where the fields open up; October to April is the window. Kadamakkudy
Shows after dark
Fort Kochi's evening theatre is Kerala's classical arts, staged short and explained for visitors. All shows: shows in Kochi.
Kathakali, with the make-up first
At the Kerala Kathakali Centre the make-up is applied on stage from about 5 to 6 pm and the play runs from about 6 to 7 pm; a ticket is about ₹600. Come at five: watching the face being built is half the evening. Kerala Kathakali Centre
Kalaripayattu and classical music
The same centre stages Kerala's martial art daily from about 7.15 to 8 pm (about ₹400) and an hour of Indian classical music from about 8 pm (about ₹500), so the whole evening can stay under one roof.
A full kalari demonstration at ENS Kalari
For a fuller demonstration, ENS Kalari at Nettoor, about 10 km south of Ernakulam, runs a lamp-lit demonstration in its sunken pit daily from 7.15 to 8.15 pm, with drums. It needs 24 hours' notice.
Dinner and drinks
The simplest Fort Kochi dinner is at the nets: from late afternoon, buy pearl spot, snapper or prawns from the stalls by Vasco da Gama Square and carry them a few steps to a stall that grills them with rice. Fish is priced by weight and cooking is extra, so agree both first. For a table on the water, Fort House Restaurant sits on a jetty near the nets and Hotel Seagull looks straight onto the harbour; across the water, Rice Boat at the Taj Malabar on Willingdon Island is the special-occasion room. Malabar Junction serves a candle-lit courtyard dinner, sometimes with live music.
Kochi's nightlife is quiet by big-city standards. Alcohol is served mostly in hotel restaurants and bars; Hotel Seagull has a small beer garden. The evening is more about the sunset, a show and a long dinner than about clubs. For an earlier, food-led start, the Kochi Heritage Project's four o'clock snack trail in Mattancherry begins at 4 pm (about ₹3,000, no walks on Sundays). Restaurants in Kochi
Plan the evening around the boats
If you stay in Ernakulam and spend the evening in Fort Kochi, or the other way round, the last boat decides when you leave. The Water Metro runs until about 8 pm and the old state ferries until about 9 pm, so check the board at the jetty. After that, the way back is a cab (Uber and Ola work) or an auto-rickshaw round by the bridges, which takes much longer. In Mattancherry shops shut by six, and the synagogue is closed on Saturdays. From June to September heavy rain can stop the boats altogether. Getting around Kochi
On a rainy evening
Lulu Mall in Edappally, next to the metro station, is the city's indoor fallback: a multiplex, bowling, an ice rink and a large food court. New Year's Eve is the opposite: the Cochin Carnival (31 December 2026 – 1 January 2027, expected) fills Fort Kochi's streets, and rooms there book out early.
