Churches in Kochi
Three churches tell most of Kochi's Christian story. St Francis is the oldest European church in India, where Vasco da Gama was first buried; the Santa Cruz Basilica, a few streets away, is the cathedral rebuilt in 1905 on a Portuguese site of 1505; and Vallarpadam, on its own island, is a Marian shrine that draws pilgrims of every faith. All three are free to enter and are working places of worship.

The three churches
Each has its own page with the map and visiting details.
St Francis Church, Fort Kochi
The Portuguese built a wooden church here in 1503 and rebuilt it in stone by 1516; the Dutch, who took Kochi in 1663, kept it and made it their Protestant church. Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 and was buried inside; about fourteen years later his remains went to Lisbon, but a memorial still marks the spot. The building is plain: white walls, a timber roof, Portuguese and Dutch tombstones set into the walls. Today it belongs to the Church of South India. St Francis Church
Santa Cruz Basilica, Fort Kochi
The first church on this site was Portuguese, founded in 1505; the British, who took Kochi from the Dutch, demolished it. The present cathedral was commissioned in 1887 and consecrated in 1905, and it became a basilica in 1984. Outside it is white with twin spires; inside, stained glass, the main altar and ceiling paintings of the Way of the Cross by the Italian Jesuit painter Antonio Moscheni. It stands a short walk from the Chinese nets. Santa Cruz Basilica
Vallarpadam Basilica, Vallarpadam Island
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Ransom keeps a picture of the Virgin brought by the Portuguese in 1524. When a flood destroyed the old church in 1676, the picture, Vallarpadathamma to everyone here, was recovered from the backwaters, and that is what pilgrims still come for, Catholics and others alike. The twin-towered white basilica is a short drive from Ernakulam over the Goshree bridges. The shrine's calendar gives the nine-day Vallarpadathamma feast as 16–24 September every year, with the 24th as the main day.
One walk through Christian Fort Kochi
St Francis Church and the Santa Cruz Basilica are both in the old quarter, within walking distance of each other, and the streets between them hold the rest of the story. The Dutch Cemetery lies by the beach road. The Indo-Portuguese Museum in the Bishop's House garden keeps the silver processional crosses, altarpieces and vestments, with remains of the Portuguese Fort Immanuel in the basement.
A guided heritage walk from St Francis Church links all of these with the Chinese nets and Bishop's House Road in about two hours: Portuguese, Dutch and British Kochi laid over each other street by street. See walking tours in Kochi.
Beyond the churches
Kerala's Christians are older than the Portuguese: the Syrian Christian community traces its faith to the apostle Thomas, and its kitchen is what Fusion Bay in Fort Kochi cooks. Two traditions are worth knowing about:
- Malayattoor Perunnal: the St Thomas hill pilgrimage, held on the Sunday after Easter. Next: 4 April 2027 (expected).
- Chavittu Nadakam: the "stamping drama" of the Latin Catholic coast, grown out of Portuguese theatre about five centuries ago. Armoured kings stamp a wooden stage while singing episodes from Charlemagne and the Bible. Its home is Gothuruthu island near North Paravur, about 35 km north, where troupes perform on request and at church feasts.
Visiting a working church
These are places of worship first.
- Dress for a church — Dress modestly: covered shoulders and knees are the safe choice, and hats come off inside.
- Mind the services — Do not walk around or photograph during Mass; sit at the back if you arrive during one.
- A break from the heat — Inside, both Fort Kochi churches are cooler and quieter than the street outside.
