Santa Cruz Basilica

← Kochi

One of the most beautiful Catholic cathedrals in India, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century.

Outside: high Gothic spires, a white facade, arches, and columns. Inside: semi-darkness, stained-glass windows, a gilded altar, and frescoes with biblical scenes painted by Italian monks. The wooden ceiling is decorated with carvings, and warm light pierces through the stained glass, painting the walls.

Here it's easy to hide from the heat and bustle, just sit and admire the details in cool, quiet surroundings. The cathedral stands next to Chinese fishing nets and street cafes, but the atmosphere inside is entirely different.

Entrance is free.
