Hyderabad's best-known temple, the white marble Birla Mandir, opened in 1976; one of its oldest living shrines, the Karmanghat Hanuman temple, dates by its own history to about 1143. Outside the city lie a temple where a wish is offered in circuits of the shrine, Telangana's great Narasimha hill and one of the oldest Jain pilgrimage sites in the south.

Three temples in the city

A modern hilltop temple, a medieval shrine and a neighbourhood goddess.

Birla Mandir: marble on Naubat Pahad

Built by the Birla Foundation over ten years and opened in 1976, the temple on Naubat Pahad hill is made of about 2,000 tonnes of white marble and dedicated to Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu. It has no traditional bells: Swami Ranganathananda of the Ramakrishna Mission, who opened it, wished the temple to be a place for meditation. The terraces look over both the old city and HITEC City, and in the evening the marble is lit.

Karmanghat Hanuman Temple: Hanuman in meditation

The temple's own history dates it to about 1143: a Kakatiya king resting during a hunt is said to have heard Rama's name being chanted and found a seated stone image of Hanuman in the forest. Hanuman here sits in dhyana, the posture of meditation, rather than striding or carrying a mountain. The temple legend tells that Aurangzeb came to break it, dropped his crowbar at a roar like thunder, and heard a voice say "kar man ghat", harden your heart: hence the name. Tuesdays and Saturdays bring long family queues.

Ujjaini Mahankali Temple: the goddess of Bonalu

By the temple's history, in 1813 Suriti Appaiah, a palanquin bearer with a military battalion, was posted to Ujjain during a cholera epidemic and vowed to bring the goddess Mahakali to Secunderabad if the disease spared them; in 1815 he installed a wooden image here. For most of the year it is a busy neighbourhood temple; during Bonalu it becomes the centre of the city.

Out of town: three pilgrimages

Yadadri and Kulpakji share the road east. Near the airport, the Statue of Equality is a new Vaishnava complex with a ticketed entry.

Chilkur Balaji, about 25 km west

A Venkateswara temple on the shore of Osman Sagar, known across India as the Visa Balaji. It keeps no hundi (donation box) and no paid or VIP darshan (viewing of the deity): everyone waits in the same line. Entry is free.

Yadadri Lakshmi Narasimha, about 65 km east

Telangana's main pilgrimage hill, often called the state's own Tirupati. In 2016–2022 the temple was rebuilt in black stone on a platform of about 6.5 hectares, but the old cave sanctum of Narasimha, an avatar of Vishnu, was kept. Darshan is free, with paid fast-track lines; weekends are crowded.

Kulpakji Jain Temple, about 80 km east

One of the oldest Jain tirthas (pilgrimage sites) of southern India and a major Svetambara destination. The revered image of Mahavira is said to be cut from a single piece of jade, with Rishabha and Neminath beside him; the temple was renovated by more than 150 craftsmen from Rajasthan and Gujarat. Free entry; leather is usually left outside.

Chilkur: eleven rounds, then a hundred and eight

The custom at Chilkur is simple. You walk eleven pradakshinas (circuits) around the sanctum while holding your request in mind; devotees explain the number as the eleven senses a person offers up. If the wish comes true, very often a foreign visa, you come back and walk 108 circuits in thanks. On weekends hundreds of people walk together, counting quietly.

Festival days

Bonalu (8 July – 1 August 2027, expected), Telangana's state festival, is held in the month of Ashada, around July, and Ujjaini Mahankali is its emotional centre: women carry decorated pots of offerings on their heads through Secunderabad behind drummers, and lakhs of devotees come to the temple. Hanuman Jayanti (20 April 2027, expected) brings the biggest crowds of the year to Karmanghat. The other festivals of the city are on the Hyderabad festivals page.

Temple etiquette

More detail on clothing is on the temple dress code page.

  • Shoes off — Footwear is left outside at every temple here; Karmanghat asks for no shoes anywhere in the premises.
  • Covered shoulders and knees — Modest clothing is expected everywhere; at the Statue of Equality shoulders and knees must be covered in the shrine areas. At Kulpakji, leave leather items outside.
  • No caps or helmets — Karmanghat asks visitors not to wear helmets, caps or hats inside and not to bring luggage bags in.
  • Ignore darshan brokers — Karmanghat warns against brokers offering quick darshan; at Chilkur there is no paid line at all.
  • Watch your valuables — The Karmanghat temple warns of theft and advises carrying little jewellery and cash.

Mosques and other shrines

Hyderabad was the capital of the Qutb Shahi sultans and then the Nizams, and its great places of worship are as much mosques and dargahs as temples. Makkah Masjid beside Charminar is one of India's largest mosques; Toli Masjid of 1671 has some of the finest Qutb Shahi stucco. Badshahi Ashurkhana is a Shia mourning hall of 1594, and Moula Ali Dargah crowns a granite hill. Non-Muslims visit outside prayer times, dressed modestly. More in mosques of Hyderabad.
