Bike and scooter rental in Hyderabad
Scooters and motorbikes in Hyderabad are rented from app-based companies with pickup hubs across the western tech districts and Secunderabad. The companies ask for a valid driving licence and ID; official UK advice adds a 1949 international driving permit to go with a foreign licence. For a single trip across town, a bike taxi booked in an app is often simpler than renting.
Cabs and bike taxis through apps
The aggregators are unusually strong here and Rapido is normally the cheapest of them. A pickup surcharge of about ₹20 is standard and not a scam.
from ~₹100 across the centre
Neither Charminar nor Golconda has a station of its own: take the Green Line to MGBS and finish by rickshaw, or ride door to door in one go.
👩 Every train has a marked coach for women; the platform floor shows where it stops.
💳 A ₹100 card takes ten percent off every metro ride and saves the ticket queue at rush hour.
Company terms: how renting works
Terms of individual rental companies, from their own sites. They differ between operators and can change, so check them when you book.
- Choose a hub and a bike
Royal Brothers, for example, lists pickup points in Kondapur, KPHB Colony, HITEC City, the Financial District, Secunderabad, Miyapur, Kukatpally, Ameerpet, Gachibowli and Madhapur. Freedo offers scooters for the city and motorcycles for longer rides.
- Documents the company asks for
Royal Brothers asks for a valid driving licence and a government-issued ID; for a foreign visitor this is usually the passport. You pick the rental period, upload the documents and pay online; prices for each period are on the company's site.
- Fuel and helmet
At Royal Brothers fuel is not included: the bike goes back with the agreed fuel level. Freedo gives a helmet free of charge; with other companies ask for one, and for a second if you carry a passenger, since the law requires both.
- Extending the rental
Royal Brothers says a rental can be extended, depending on availability.
Official rules: the law and UK travel advice
These rules are not set by the rental company. They come from the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and from the UK FCDO travel advice for India, and apply whichever company you rent from.
- International driving permit (FCDO) — FCDO tells British visitors to carry both the 1949 version of the international driving permit and their UK licence. The permit can only be obtained in the UK, so get it before you travel. Rules on how long you can drive on a foreign licence vary from state to state. Travellers of other nationalities should check their own government's advice.
- Helmet for rider and passenger (Motor Vehicles Act, s. 129) — Every person above four years of age driving, riding or carried on a motorcycle in a public place must wear a helmet; Sikhs wearing a turban are exempt. FCDO adds: wear proper footwear too.
- One passenger only (Motor Vehicles Act, s. 128) — A motorcycle may carry no more than one person besides the rider, on a proper seat fixed behind the rider's seat.
Road safety
India has a high death rate from road accidents, and FCDO advises avoiding travel at night and in fog, when visibility is low and crime is more likely at night. Wandering livestock make driving dangerous in the city as well as outside it. If there is an accident, comply with the police if they are at the scene; if they are not, it may be unsafe to stay, and FCDO advises going to the nearest police station if it is safe to do so. The emergency number is 112; see also emergency numbers and is India safe.
When renting is not worth it
For a single ride across town, a bike taxi or auto-rickshaw booked through Rapido, Uber or Ola is usually simpler: the price is fixed in the app before you set off, and Rapido is normally the cheapest of the three. The metro covers 69 km on three lines from 6 am to 11 pm and is the way past the HITEC City and Gachibowli traffic. Charminar and Golconda have no station of their own; for Charminar, take the Green Line to MGBS and finish by rickshaw. More in getting around Hyderabad and Hyderabad Metro.
Riding weather
November to February is the comfortable season. From April to June daytime heat can pass 40 °C, and from July to October sudden cloudbursts are common; keep a rain cover for your phone and bag.
