Where to stay in Gokarna

← Gokarna

The choice in Gokarna is between the temple and the sea. The old town around the Mahabaleshwara temple has simple pilgrim guesthouses and puts you in the lanes before dawn; Kudle Beach, a short walk south, has the widest range, from hostels to yoga retreats; the hills around Om Beach hold the quieter resorts. Decide what the trip is for, then the area. The hotels listed above are grouped here by where they stand.

The areas, from the temple to the far coves

From north to south, in the order the coast runs away from the town.

The temple town

The old town around Car Street, the Mahabaleshwara temple and the Koti Teertha tank. Stays here are plain pilgrim guesthouses: Parvathikrupa stands barely eighty metres from the temple, and Vatsalya Seva Sadan is within easy reach of both the temple and the tank; both are vegetarian and devotional in feel. The right base for early darshan, for the Shivaratri week and for the monsoon, when the town guesthouses stay open while the beaches shut.

Above the main beach

Zostel sits on the cliff over Gokarna Beach, the town beach, about thirteen minutes' walk from Kudle. A middle position: the temple town and the beaches are both within reach on foot.

Kudle Beach

Karnataka Tourism describes Kudle as the largest of the beaches, a palm-fringed crescent of cafes and guesthouses about ten minutes' walk south of town. Most of the choice is here: hostels (The Hosteller, five minutes from the sand), wooden cottages (Kudle Ocean Front, about a hundred metres back), mid-range resorts (Kudle Beach View with its pool, or Gokarna International Beach Resort right on the beach) and yoga retreats (Namaste Yoga Farm, a three-minute walk from the sand, and Namaste Sanjeevini on the hilltop). The pick for a first visit and for long stays.

Between Kudle and Om, and around Om Beach

Om Beach is about 6 km from town by road and the hub for water sports and boats. The hills and forest around it hold the self-contained places: Mandala Village in the forest between Om and Kudle, Sanskruti Resort between Om and the temple town, the state-run Om Beach Resort by Jungle Lodges on a hillock above a green valley, and SwaSwara above Om Beach, a package-based Ayurveda and yoga retreat. Quieter, greener, and a rickshaw or scooter ride from the temple.

Half Moon and Paradise

No road reaches these coves: only the cliff path or a boat. Karnataka Tourism lists village huts, hammocks, a few shacks and basic toilets at Half Moon, and at Paradise very basic huts, a freshwater well, no shops and no toilets; Paradise is above all a camping beach. For a night or two with supplies, not for luggage. In the monsoon the boats stop and the paths get slippery, so this option disappears.

Further along the coast

Two retreats stand well away from Gokarna itself: Red Earth, clifftop cottages near Honey Beach (Honnebail), and OmBodhi, beachfront cottages on a quiet stretch towards Kumta. Seclusion is the point; you will need a car for the temple and the trek.

Which area suits whom

For the temple, stay in town. The morning circuit (a dip at Koti Teertha, Maha Ganapati, then Mahabaleshwara) starts early, and the lanes are at their most alive before the beaches wake.

For a first visit, Kudle is the easy answer: cafes and a beach at the door, the town ten minutes away, and the cliff path to Om starting from Kudle itself.

For quiet and comfort, look at the hills around Om Beach, where the resorts have space and greenery, and accept a ride to town.

On a budget, the hostels on Kudle and above the main beach and the pilgrim guesthouses in town are the cheapest beds. Selections by type: Budget hotels, Boutique hotels, Luxury hotels.

Booking tips

Maha Shivaratri week: book about a month ahead. The festival falls in the beach season; beach huts at Kudle and Om are far from the temple street, so a room in town is worth the trade that week. Next dates: 6–9 March 2027 (expected).

Late arrival: the railway station is outside the town, and at night rickshaws ask about double. Ask your guesthouse to send someone to meet the train.

Monsoon: from June to September the shacks close and the far coves are cut off, but the guesthouses in town stay open.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Gokarna?

Kudle Beach for most first visits: the widest choice of stays, cafes on the sand and the town ten minutes' walk away. Stay in town if the temple is the reason for the trip.

Is it better to stay in Gokarna town or on the beach?

Town for the temple, early darshan and the festival week; the beach for swimming, cafes and the cliff path. Kudle is close enough to walk to town.

Can I stay on Om Beach?

Yes: several resorts stand in the hills around Om Beach, about 6 km from town, including the state-run Jungle Lodges resort and the SwaSwara retreat.

Can I stay on Paradise Beach?

Only very simply: basic huts and camping, with no shops and no toilets. It is reached on foot or by boat, and only in the dry season.

Which beach is safe in Gokarna?

Karnataka Tourism names Kudle and Om as the beaches where swimming is safe by day in season, and advises against swimming at Paradise and the main town beach because of rocks and strong currents.
