Budget hotels and hostels in Gokarna
A cheap bed in Gokarna comes in three kinds, and the choice is mostly about which Gokarna you came for. Backpacker hostels sit on the cliff above the main beach and near Kudle, simple wooden cottages stand a short walk from Kudle's sand, and plain vegetarian pilgrim guesthouses are a few steps from the Mahabaleshwara Temple. Decide between the temple town and the beach first, then pick the bed.

Town or beach
The town is one street from the bus stand to the temple and the main beach. Staying here puts you within walking distance of Car Street, the morning temple round and the buses, and it is the better base at Maha Shivaratri, when the beach huts feel a long way from the procession.
Kudle is the developed beach, with cafés and a social crowd, close enough to the town by rickshaw or the cliff path. Most of the hostels and cheap cottages cluster around it. Om Beach, about 6 km out, is quieter but further from everything. For the full picture of the areas, see where to stay in Gokarna.

Zostel Gokarna
A sea-facing hostel on the cliff above the main beach, part of India's largest hostel chain, for solo travellers and backpackers. Dorms keep it cheap, its café is the real draw, and the temple town and Kudle (about thirteen minutes on foot) are both within reach.
The Hosteller Gokarna
A more polished hostel five minutes from Kudle Beach, with an outdoor pool, a rooftop terrace and a vegetarian café; mixed and female-only dorms plus a few private rooms. It is adults-only and built around a 24-hour common area, so it leans sociable rather than quiet.
Kudle Ocean Front Resort
Ten to fifteen compact wooden cottages in greenery about a hundred metres from Kudle Beach, clean and cosy, for a quiet, semi-secluded base. The access lane is steep and narrow, and the kitchen is simple.
Parvathikrupa
A plain pilgrim guesthouse about eighty metres from the Mahabaleshwara Temple, for those who come for darshan rather than the beach. Two-, three- and four-bedded rooms with hot water; the house is devotional and vegetarian.
Vatsalya Seva Sadan
Pure-vegetarian pilgrim lodging within easy reach of the temple and the Koti Teertha tank: clean, simple rooms and a quiet, devotional feel, practical for families.
When and how to book
- Maha Shivaratri: the town has few rooms and the festival week falls in the beach season, so book about a month ahead. Dates of the chariot festival: 6–9 March 2027 (expected).
- Monsoon: from June to September the beach shacks close and swimming is unsafe, but the town guesthouses stay open.
- Late arrival by train: the station is 9–10 km out and rickshaws charge about double at night, so ask the guesthouse to send someone.
- More comfortable options are on the boutique hotels and luxury hotels pages.
