Waterfalls near Gokarna
Gokarna itself has no waterfall: the town is sand, laterite cliffs and the sea. The falls start inland, where the Western Ghats rise behind the coast, and the one people mean is Vibhuti Falls near Yana, about 50 km away, a small stepped cascade with pools you can swim in. Jog Falls, one of the highest in India, is a much longer trip. Go between October and January, when the water still runs strong and the forest path has dried out.
The waterfalls within reach
There is one waterfall in the Gokarna catalogue, and two more that Karnataka Tourism lists for the same inland trip.
Vibhuti Falls (about 50 km)
Vibhuti Falls drops about seventy feet (some twenty metres) in steps over limestone ledges and fills a chain of clear pools at the bottom. The name comes from the limestone itself. From the gate, a forest path of about a kilometre and a half leads down to the water. It lies in the Ankola taluk, about 8–10 km from Yana, which is why the two are usually done on the same day.
Benne Hole Falls (near Yana)
Karnataka Tourism places Benne Hole near Yana, about 24 km from the Yana caves. There are no visit details for it in the catalogue yet, so ask locally about the path and the water level before setting out.
Jog Falls (about 140 km)
Karnataka Tourism describes Jog as India's second-highest waterfall, 253 metres, about 140 km from Gokarna and 103 km from Yana. It is a full day's outing on its own rather than an add-on to the Yana trip.
Vibhuti Falls and the Yana rocks in one day
Vibhuti lies inland toward Sirsi, close to Yana. At Yana two towers of black limestone stand out of the rainforest, the taller about 120 metres, with a cave shrine at its foot where water drips onto a self-formed Shiva lingam (the stone emblem of Shiva). The rocks are on the caves of Gokarna page; the falls are about 8–10 km further on.
The catalogue has no bus details for this route, so plan on a hired car or a scooter, and on wet stone underfoot at both stops. Other ideas for a day out of town are on the day trips page.
When to go
October to January is the window. The monsoon has filled the stream, but the trail has dried and the pools are calm enough to swim. By the dry months the flow thins, and in the monsoon itself (June to September, when the coast gets close to a metre of rain a month in June and July) the approach can close altogether. Karnataka Tourism leans the other way and names the monsoon and the weeks right after it, when the water is at its fullest, though it also notes that many waterfall trails are safer only after the monsoon. Month-by-month rain is on the Gokarna weather page.
At the falls: water, rock and leeches
In season the pools at Vibhuti are swimmable, and a lifeguard is usually on duty; stay out when the stream runs brown and fast after rain. The limestone is slippery, so wear shoes with grip rather than flip-flops. After rain leeches are common on the forest path: a little salt in a pocket makes them let go. The UK Foreign Office warns that rivers in India can have strong currents and that people drown every year; take local advice and follow lifeguards' instructions. Emergency numbers are on the emergency numbers page.
