Gokarna trip cost: what things cost

← Gokarna

Gokarna is not an expensive place to travel. A dorm bed starts at about ₹500 a night, a scooter costs about ₹300–600 a day, the temple town eats in the cheapest price band, and the main sights, from the Mahabaleshwara temple to the five-beach trek, cost nothing. The bill grows with comfort: beach resorts, yoga retreats and the wellness addresses above Om Beach are where the money goes. All prices below are approximate.

Food, sights and trips

Food. The guide's eateries carry price bands rather than menus: the tiffin rooms and thali places around Car Street are in the cheapest band (₹), the beach cafes at Kudle and Om in the middle one (₹₹). More on what to eat in Gokarna.

Sights. Entry is free at the Mahabaleshwara and Maha Ganapati temples; Koti Teertha, Car Street and the cliff trail cost nothing either. The Om Beach parking area charges a small fee.

Day trips. The Yana rocks have no entry charge, Mirjan Fort is free to enter, and the gate at Vibhuti Falls is about ₹20 with parking. Shared boat trips out to sea from Tadri harbour and Om Beach cost about ₹499–700, and mangrove trips on the Aghanashini estuary start at about ₹499 for an hour to ninety minutes.

How not to overpay

Small habits that keep the costs where they should be.

  • Agree on the fare first — Rickshaws have no meters; settle the price, per vehicle, before you sit down.
  • Avoid the night premium — A late train doubles the cost of the last leg. Ask your guesthouse to send a car instead.
  • Book festival weeks early — Around Maha Shivaratri prices rise and the town's few rooms go; book about a month ahead.
  • Carry cash — Card payment is not something to count on at the town's eateries.
  • Bargain politely on Car Street — Haggling is normal in the bazaar and goes better with a smile. General advice on money in India is in the money guide.
