Gokarna

How to reach Gokarna

← Gokarna

Gokarna has no airport and its station is not in the town, which makes the trip look harder than it is. From Goa it is a 1.5–2 hour ride on the Konkan Railway or about three hours by road; from Bengaluru there is one overnight train and a choice of night buses. The one thing to plan is the last leg: Gokarna Road station stands 9–10 km out among the fields, while buses drop you in town.

Gokarna Road station (GOK)

The name is misleading: the platform stands 6–10 km out among the fields, and the town starts after a rickshaw ride. Three to five trains a day stop here.

Best option

Buses from Bengaluru and Goa

Buses drop you in the town itself, which is their whole advantage over the train: no 8 km of night road at the end.

Taxi from Goa

About 120–150 km down NH-66, door to door. Worth it with luggage, with a family, or when the train times do not fit the day.

From June to September the beach boats do not run and the cliff paths get slippery, so plan on rickshaws and the road.

By train: Gokarna Road (GOK)

Gokarna Road is a stop on the Konkan Railway, the line that runs down the west coast through Goa to Mangaluru. Three to five trains a day stop here, and many long-distance services pass straight through: if yours does, Ankola (about 20 km) and Kumta (about 31 km) are the fallbacks, with a bus or rickshaw from there.

  • From Goa (Madgaon): Konkan locals and expresses, about 1.5–2 hours, from about ₹60–150.
  • From Bengaluru: the Panchaganga Express, the one daily overnight train, about 12 hours; roughly ₹405 in sleeper and ₹1,070 in 3A. Sleeper berths go first, and tickets open 60 days ahead on IRCTC.

More about the station itself is on the Gokarna Road station page.

The last leg from the station

Rickshaw drivers meet every train and quote per vehicle, not per person: about ₹100–200 to town and ₹250–400 to Om Beach. A few local buses are timed to the arrivals and run to the town bus stand for about ₹20–30, cheap but not worth waiting for at night. After dark the rickshaw fare roughly doubles and there is nothing else on that road, so on a late train ask your guesthouse to send a car.

By bus

The bus's whole advantage is that it drops you in the town itself, close to the temple, with no night road at the end.

  • From Bengaluru: overnight KSRTC and private sleepers, about 10–10.5 hours; from about ₹606 without air-conditioning, ₹1,500–2,500 for an AC sleeper.
  • From Margao: Kadamba state buses, about 3.5 hours, ₹100–200.
  • From Panaji: private coaches, about 4–5 hours, from about ₹850.

Karnataka Tourism also lists KSRTC and private buses from Hubballi, Mangaluru and Karwar.

By road and by air

Gokarna lies just off NH-66, the coastal highway. A car with a driver from Goa covers about 145 km in roughly three hours, for about ₹2,100–4,400: worth it with luggage, with a family, or when the train times do not fit. Karnataka Tourism gives the road distances as about 485 km from Bengaluru, 238 km from Mangaluru, 140 km from Hubballi and 59 km from Karwar.

There is no airport in Gokarna. The nearest is Dabolim in Goa, about 149 km away, then Manohar International at Mopa, North Goa, about 175 km; from either, continue by taxi or by train from Madgaon. Karnataka Tourism also names Mangaluru airport as an option.

When the trip is easiest

November to February is the best window, and October and March are good. From June to September the beach boats stop and the cliff paths get slippery, so once you arrive plan on rickshaws and the road; the town guesthouses stay open, but swimming is unsafe. At Maha Shivaratri the town fills: book a room and the train about a month ahead. Getting between the beaches is on the getting around page.
