How to get around Gokarna
Gokarna is small enough to walk and spread out enough to need wheels. The town is one street running to the temple and the main beach; the famous coves sit behind headlands to the south, some with no road at all. So the usual mix is your feet in town, a rickshaw or scooter to Kudle and Om, the cliff path or a boat between the far beaches, and a car with a driver for anything inland. Fares and notes for each are in the cards above; below is how to choose and what to watch for.
Scooter
The beaches lie behind headlands and the roads climb, so a scooter buys you the whole coast instead of one bay. Check the brakes before you take it.
~₹300–600 a day
Rickshaws to the beaches
The usual way to Kudle and Om Beach without a licence. There are no meters, so the price is settled before you sit down.
~₹150–330 from town
Boats between the beaches
Om, Half Moon and Paradise connect by water in a few minutes, where the cliff path takes an hour. In season only.
~₹100–300 per person
On foot along the cliffs
The town itself is one street to the temple and the main beach. The path linking Kudle, Om and Half Moon is the classic walk here, about an hour between bays.

From June to September the beach boats do not run and the cliff paths get slippery, so plan on rickshaws and the road.
Which way to move
In town, walk. Car Street, the Maha Ganapati and Mahabaleshwara temples, the Koti Teertha tank and the main beach are all within a short walk of the bus stand (Koti Teertha is about 700 m from it). Karnataka Tourism puts Kudle Beach about ten minutes' walk south of town.
To Kudle and Om, take a rickshaw or a scooter. Om Beach is about 6 km from town by road, and the beaches beyond it, Belekan included, about 8 km. A scooter is the most flexible option if you hold a licence: the roads climb over the headlands, and with your own wheels the whole coast is open to you rather than one bay. Without one, rickshaws are the standard way to the beaches.
Between Om, Half Moon and Paradise, walk or take a boat. These coves are linked by the cliff path and by small boats; no road reaches Paradise. The boat takes minutes, the path about an hour from bay to bay.
Inland, hire a car with a driver. Yana is about 52 km by road (around 1.5 hours, says Karnataka Tourism), Vibhuti Falls about 8 km beyond Yana, and Mirjan Fort about 21–22 km north on NH-66. For these, a car with a driver or a scooter for confident riders is the practical choice.
Rickshaws and taxis: how fares work
There are no meters in Gokarna, and that is normal rather than a trick.
- Agree the price before you sit down — Name the destination, hear the price, settle it, then get in. From town to the beaches, fares run at about ₹150–330.
- The price is per vehicle — At Gokarna Road station, drivers meet every train and quote per rickshaw, not per person: about ₹100–200 to town and ₹250–400 to Om Beach. The station is outside the town, so this ride is part of almost every arrival.
- At night the fare doubles — Rickshaws do wait for late trains, but they ask about twice the daytime price, and nothing else runs on that road. It is easier to ask your guesthouse to send someone.
- A cheaper option by day — A few local buses are timed to meet trains and drop you at the town bus stand for about ₹20–30. Not worth waiting for at night.
Renting a scooter
Scooters go for about ₹300–600 a day and open up the whole coast. More on where and how: Bike rental in Gokarna.
- Check the brakes first — The roads to the beaches climb over the headlands. Test the brakes before you ride off.
- Parking at Om Beach is paid — Karnataka Tourism lists the beaches as free to enter; the Om Beach parking area charges a small fee.
Boats and the cliff path
Om, Half Moon and Paradise connect by water in a few minutes, at about ₹100–300 per person. Boats leave from Om Beach and also from Belekan, the cove a road reaches south of Paradise. A common plan is to walk one way and take a boat back. Details on routes and seasons: Boat rides in Gokarna.
The path linking Kudle, Om and Half Moon is the classic walk here, about an hour between bays, marked with red-and-white arrows on the rocks. It is a cliff trail over bare laterite, with little shade and steep sections, not a promenade: start early, carry water, and keep off the edges once the light goes.
June to September is a different map
From June to September the beach boats do not run and the cliff paths get slippery, so plan on rickshaws and the road. Paradise and Half Moon, which only a boat or the path reaches, are hard to get to for the season.
