Boat rides in Gokarna

← Gokarna

Boating in Gokarna means three different things. Small boats hop between Om, Half Moon and Paradise, saving an hour on the cliff path. Longer sea trips from Tadri harbour and Om Beach run along the headlands, often with dolphins off the bow. And from Tadri, quieter boats and kayaks go up into the mangroves of the Aghanashini estuary. All of it runs from October to May; in the monsoon the sea is closed to small boats.

Which boat trip to choose

Prices below are approximate and change with the season and the size of the group.

Between the beaches

Om, Half Moon and Paradise connect by water in a few minutes, where the cliff path takes about an hour. Boats leave from Om Beach and from Belekan, the cove with a road south of Paradise; about ₹100–300 per person. The usual plan is to walk out along the cliffs and come back by boat.

Out to sea and dolphins

Local boats from Tadri harbour and Om Beach run along the headlands past the coves, often with dolphins somewhere offshore. Karnataka Tourism lists the dolphin boat ride from Om Beach at about ₹300–500, October to May. Longer shared trips of up to three hours from Tadri, which add the backwaters, cost roughly ₹500–800 per person. Mornings give the best chance of dolphins.

Into the Aghanashini mangroves

Boats and beginner-friendly kayaks leave Tadri, twenty-odd minutes from town, for the mangrove channels of the estuary, a Ramsar wetland with some 115 bird species. Shared trips start at about ₹500 and last an hour to ninety minutes; the first slot after dawn is the stillest, with kingfishers close in.

Across the estuary to Nirvana Beach

Nirvana Beach is a short way across the Aghanashini by water but 45 km of rough lanes by road; boat transfers cross the estuary in season.

Where to start and how to book

Beach boats are hired on the sand at Om Beach or Belekan; there is nothing to book. Agree the price and the drop-off point before you get in, and check the time of the last boat back if you plan to return by water.

Sea and backwater trips go from Tadri harbour, a working fishing harbour about 12 km from town, and from Om Beach. Book a day ahead in season; the operators are small and come and go, so check that the one you find is still running. Ready-made tours with free cancellation are listed below the text; compare them with the local boats.

Karnataka Tourism also lists kayaking at Kudle (about ₹300–600 for 30 minutes) and scuba diving at Netrani Island, best arranged from Murudeshwar; Netrani is a restricted Navy area, so all diving and snorkelling happens from the boat, without landing.

Safety on the water

Boarding happens from an open beach or a working harbour, so keep your phone in a dry bag. Life jackets should be provided: ask for one and wear it, and do not go with a boat that has none. No licensing body or regulator for dolphin-watching boats on this coast could be identified, so the choice of operator is yours to judge. Mornings bring the calmest sea. From June to September the sea is closed to small boats, and the beach boats do not run at all.

When to go

October to May is the boating season. Within it, November to February has the clearest water; April and May are hotter, with the sea starting to roughen. Go early: the first trips after dawn are the stillest on the estuary and the likeliest for dolphins at sea. Month-by-month sea conditions: Gokarna weather.
