Bike and scooter rental in Gokarna

← Gokarna

In Gokarna a scooter is the most useful thing you can rent. The beaches hide behind headlands and the roads between them climb, so on foot or by rickshaw you get one bay at a time, and on two wheels you get the whole coast. Expect about ₹300–600 a day. Bring your licence and an International Driving Permit, wear a helmet and check the brakes before you ride off.

Scooter

The beaches lie behind headlands and the roads climb, so a scooter buys you the whole coast instead of one bay. Check the brakes before you take it.

~₹300–600 a day

🚂 Many long-distance services pass straight through. The fallbacks are Ankola and Kumta, about 25 km away, with a bus or rickshaw from there.

🌙 Rickshaws do wait for late trains, but they quote twice the daytime price and there is nothing else on that road. Ask your guesthouse to send someone instead.

🎫 It is the one daily overnight train from Bengaluru, and sleeper berths go first. Tickets open 60 days ahead on IRCTC.

Why a scooter here

The town itself is one street from the bus stand to the temple and the main beach, easy on foot. Everything else is a ride: Om Beach is about 6 km out, Belekan has a road right down to the sand, and the inland trips go much further. Rickshaws are the usual way to Kudle and Om without a licence, at about ₹150–330 from town, settled before you get in because there are no meters. For a few days of moving around, a scooter at ₹300–600 a day comes out cheaper and freer. Other ways of getting about are on the getting around page.

Before you ride off

  • Licence — The UK Foreign Office tells British drivers to carry both the 1949 International Driving Permit and their UK licence, and to get the permit before travelling, since it cannot be bought outside the UK. It also notes that rules on driving with a UK licence vary from state to state.
  • Helmet and shoes — The UK Foreign Office advises wearing a helmet and proper footwear on a motorbike, so leave the flip-flops for the beach.
  • Brakes — The roads to the beaches climb and drop steeply behind the headlands, so test both brakes before you leave the rental.
  • Price — About ₹300–600 a day; agree the total and the return time before you take the keys.

On the road

The UK Foreign Office warns that India has a high death rate from road accidents and that wandering livestock make driving dangerous in rural areas too. The same advice notes that thieves on motorbikes sometimes ride past and snatch valuables, so keep bags on the inside, away from the road. From June to September the rains are heavy (close to a metre a month in June and July) and the beach boats stop; ride slowly or take a rickshaw. More on the safety in Gokarna page.

Where a scooter takes you

Om Beach and the viewpoint

About 6 km out of town to the Om Beach parking area (a small fee is charged); the cliff above is the one place the beach reads as the syllable ॐ.

Sanikatta and Mirjan Fort

The Sanikatta salt pans lie along the Gokarna–Kumta road, and Mirjan Fort is about 21–22 km away, just off NH-66 north of Kumta.

Yana and Vibhuti Falls

Inland toward Sirsi: the Yana rocks and, about 8–10 km on, Vibhuti Falls, about 50 km from Gokarna. A long ride on ghat roads; go early.

Nirvana Beach

Close across the estuary but about 45 km and an hour and a half of rough lanes by road; Nirvana Beach has no cafés, so bring water.
