Gokarna railway station: Gokarna Road (GOK)
Gokarna's railway station is Gokarna Road, code GOK, on the Konkan Railway, and the name is misleading: the platform stands about 10 km out of town among the fields. Only a handful of trains a day stop here in each direction. The town starts after a rickshaw ride of about ₹100–200, while the bus stand, by contrast, is in Gokarna itself.
Gokarna Road station (GOK)
The name is misleading: the platform stands 6–10 km out among the fields, and the town starts after a rickshaw ride. Three to five trains a day stop here.
Best option
Buses from Bengaluru and Goa
Buses drop you in the town itself, which is their whole advantage over the train: no 8 km of night road at the end.
A station in the fields
Gokarna Road is a small stop on the Konkan Railway, the coastal line that also serves Madgaon in Goa. It carries the town's name but does not stand in it, so every arrival ends with a road transfer. Not every long-distance train stops at GOK; many pass straight through. The fallbacks are Ankola, about 20 km from Gokarna, and Kumta, about 31 km, with a bus or rickshaw from there. When you search for tickets, look for Gokarna Road, code GOK.
Trains to Gokarna Road
The two connections most people use. Fares are approximate.
From Goa (Madgaon)
Konkan Railway locals and expresses take about 2 hours southbound (the trip back can take longer), from about ₹60–150.
From Bengaluru
The Panchaganga Express is the one daily overnight train: it leaves Bengaluru in the evening and reaches Gokarna Road early the next morning, around 12 hours in all. The return train leaves Gokarna Road in the evening and is in Bengaluru early the next morning. About ₹405 in sleeper, about ₹1,070 in 3A.
Book early
Sleeper berths on the Panchaganga go first. Tickets open 60 days ahead on IRCTC; for the Shivaratri week, a month ahead is a safe margin.
From the station to town
Drivers meet every train, so the last leg is easy by day. It only gets awkward at night.
- Rickshaw
Prices are per vehicle, not per person: about ₹100–200 to town and ₹250–400 to Om Beach. There are no meters, so agree on the fare before you get in.
- Local bus
A few buses are timed to the trains and drop you at the town bus stand for about ₹20–30. Cheap, but not worth waiting for at night.
- Arriving at night
Rickshaws do wait for late trains but quote about double, and there is nothing else on that road. Ask your guesthouse to send someone.
Gokarna bus stand
Buses drop you in the town itself, and that is their whole advantage over the train: no 10 km of night road at the end. Overnight KSRTC and private sleeper buses from Bengaluru take about 10–10.5 hours, from about ₹606 without air-conditioning or ₹1,500–2,500 for an AC sleeper. Kadamba state buses from Margao in Goa take about 3.5 hours for about ₹100–200, and private coaches from Panaji about 4–5 hours, from about ₹850. From the bus stand, Koti Teertha and the temple lanes are roughly 700 m away on foot, and the Udupi-style Pai Hotel is next door for a first thali.
