How to reach Gangotri
Direct seasonal bus
In the yatra season there are through buses from both Rishikesh and Haridwar: one long mountain day on the NH-34 instead of changing at Uttarkashi. They leave at first light and fill quickly.
Best option
Shared jeep from Uttarkashi
The flexible version, in two legs: Rishikesh to Uttarkashi in a bus or jeep, a night there, then a jeep up the last hundred kilometres. Jeeps leave when they are full, not by timetable.
Private taxi from the plains
One car for the whole journey, which buys you stops, luggage space and the freedom to turn back if the road is blocked. It is priced accordingly.
Char Dham registration is compulsory for foreigners too: passport, visa details and a QR e-pass. Without it you are not let through.
