Walking to Gaumukh

Eighteen kilometres one way to the snout of the Gangotri glacier at about 4,023 m. This is where the Ganga comes out from under the ice: the source itself, not a symbol of one. The park issues no more than 150 permits a day.

April to about 20 June, then mid-September to October. The monsoon closes the trail in between.
