Area25 km below Gangotri on the highway

A wide, quiet bowl of deodar forest and apple orchards at about 2,600 m, 25 km below Gangotri, and the standard halt for acclimatising on the way up: a cluster of villages (Harsil, Bagori, Mukhba, Dharali) of mixed Garhwali and Bhotiya culture, at its best when the apples ripen in September and October. One thing to know: on 5 August 2025 a debris flow down the Kheer Gad destroyed much of neighbouring Dharali and struck Harsil, with about 70 people killed or missing. The highway was repaired and the pilgrimage resumed on 10 September 2025; Dharali's market and orchards are still being rebuilt, and road information matters in the monsoon.
