How the day runs

Ram Navami, the ninth lunar day of the bright half of Chaitra, is Rama’s birthday and the last day of Chaitra Navratri. Many devotees fast until noon, the hour of his birth, and temples rock a cradle for the child Rama at midday. Through the day there are readings of the Ramayana, and later small chariot processions with images of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman move through the neighbourhoods. The festival itself is described on the Ram Navami page.

Varanasi has a particular claim on the day. The Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidas’s Awadhi retelling of the Ramayana, is tied to this city, where Tulsidas lived, and recitations of it, some running through the night at the ghats, are the Varanasi way of keeping Ram Navami. The observance is public and free at any Rama or Hanuman temple.

The city’s great Rama festival comes in autumn, with the month-long Ramnagar Ramlila. For the biggest Ram Navami crowds, Ayodhya, Rama’s birthplace by tradition, is the place.
