The story behind the day
In the Ramayana, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya has long been without an heir and holds a great fire sacrifice. A celestial being rises from the fire with a pot of milk-rice, and soon the king has four sons. The eldest, Rama, is born to Queen Kausalya on the ninth day of the bright half of Chaitra. Hindu tradition sees Rama as the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the model of the righteous king. More on him: [Rama](/en/deities/rama/).
The date follows the lunar calendar, so it moves between late March and late April: 26 March in 2026, 15 April in 2027, 3 April in 2028. It is kept far beyond India too: descendants of indentured workers in Trinidad, Guyana, Mauritius and South Africa mark it with the Ramayana and bhajans.
