Gaura Purnima: the appearance day of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
The full moon Chaitanya was born under
Gaura Purnima is the appearance day of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the 16th-century saint of Bengal whom Gaudiya Vaishnavas, ISKCON among them, revere as Krishna himself. It falls on the full moon of Phalguna, the same day Bengal keeps Dol Jatra and much of India lights the Holi bonfire. Next: 22 March 2027. Every ISKCON temple marks it, but the centre is Mayapur in West Bengal, his birthplace, where the day is the high point of a festival of about a month.
The appearance day of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Mayapur's biggest day of the year
Phalguna Purnima, the full moon of Phalguna. The Vaishnava calendar of ISKCON and the central government's restricted list (as Dolyatra) confirm it.
The legend
On the Phalguna full moon of 1486, a boy named Vishvambhara is born in Bengal.
Young Nimai shines at logic, yet, legend says, throws his finest treatise into the Ganga so as not to outshine a friend.
Around 1508, in Gaya, he takes initiation, and back home he closes his school to devote himself to chanting Krishna's names.
He teaches that love of God stands above caste, and chants Krishna's names in the streets with anyone who wants to join.
At 24 he becomes a monk named Krishna Chaitanya, and his followers revere him as an incarnation of Krishna.

Where to celebrate
Mayapur ⭐
Worth the trip
Mayapur is where Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared, and the full moon of Phalguna is the one day of the year the whole town is built around.
How the day runs
For devotees Gaura Purnima is a fast day. The fast lasts until moonrise; after that the community breaks it together and the food offered to Chaitanya is shared out as prasad. In Mayapur that offering is chhappan bhog, fifty-six dishes.
The rest of the day is worship. Chaitanya's image receives abhisheka, a ceremonial bathing in fruit juices, milk, honey and flowers, and kirtan goes on for hours: a leader sings Krishna's names and the crowd answers. Kirtan in the street, open to anyone who wants to join, is the practice Chaitanya himself taught, so on his day it is the main thing you will see and hear.
In Mayapur the celebration continues the next day with a feast in honour of Jagannath Mishra, Chaitanya's father, and many pilgrims leave only after it.
Gaura Purnima and Holi
Gaura Purnima, Dol Jatra and Holi share one date: Phalguna Purnima. The central government's restricted holiday list gives the day as Dolyatra, together with Holika Dahan. In Bengal, Radha and Krishna are carried through the streets on a swinging palanquin, and many places add colours; in Mayapur the day is devotional first. If you want the colour festival as well, see our Holi page for where and how it is played.
The month in Mayapur and the parikrama
Mayapur fills for weeks before the full moon. The festival around Gaura Purnima runs about a month, and pilgrims arrive from the many countries where ISKCON took root.
Its biggest single event is the Navadvipa Mandala Parikrama, a walk of about a week through the nine 'islands' (dvipas) around Mayapur: villages, temples and river crossings connected with Chaitanya's life. It starts roughly a fortnight before Gaura Purnima, with a preparatory ceremony at the Yogapitha, the shrine at his birthplace, and moves as a procession with drums, banners and singing, camping overnight. ISKCON Mayapur says the walk has grown from seventy devotees to ten thousand and more, and it is split into language groups: since 1996 one group has walked in English and Russian, and there are separate Bengali, Hindi and South Indian language groups.
Registration is required. It opens on the festival portal linked from srimayapurdhama.com, and a participation contribution covers camp accommodation and meals. More on the walk: Mayapur parikrama.
Where to stay and when to arrive
Rooms are the hard part. ISKCON Mayapur's own FAQ says advance booking is highly recommended, especially around the festival and the parikrama.
- Decide what you are coming for
For the parikrama and the full moon, arrive on the day the parikrama begins, about a fortnight ahead. For Gaura Purnima alone, arrive two or three days before.
- Book from the official page
ISKCON Mayapur runs guest houses on the campus (Gada, Conch, Vamsi, Chakra, Gita and Ishodyan Bhavans, with reception at Gada Bhavan), booked through its own accommodation page. Several sites sell Mayapur rooms without being ISKCON Mayapur, so start from the official site. Devotees usually book two to three months ahead.
- Have a fallback
Private guest houses stand outside the campus; Nabadwip, across the river by ferry, and Krishnanagar, the district town, take the overflow. See where to stay in Mayapur and how to get to Mayapur.
- Arrive in daylight
There is no bridge between Nabadwip and Mayapur, and the boats do not run through the night, so a late train can leave you on the wrong bank.
Etiquette and crowds
Mayapur on Gaura Purnima is a place of worship at its fullest.
- Dress for the temple — Covered shoulders and knees, shoes off and left outside. Entry to the ISKCON Mayapur temple is free.
- Join or step aside — Anyone may join the kirtan; if you only want to watch, stand at the side and let the procession pass.
- Respect the fast — Many people around you have not eaten all day. Prasad is served after moonrise; wait to be served.
- Crowd basics — FCDO notes that stampedes have occurred at some events with large crowds, including religious gatherings, and advises following the advice of the local authorities. Agree a meeting point. Emergency number in India: 112.
