Delhi or Jaipur: the capital's history or the Pink City's forts

Delhi or Jaipur is usually not either-or: the two are 280 km apart, the Vande Bharat covers it in about 3 h 40 min, and both are corners of the Golden Triangle. Delhi gives the empires and the scale. Jaipur gives the colour: hilltop forts, honey-stone palaces, the Hawa Mahal and bazaars piled with block-print and gemstones. If you only have time for one, the question is monuments in a megacity or a royal city at a gentler size.

Delhi

Eight capitals stacked on one plain, and you can walk between them: a 12th-century victory tower, the Mughal tomb that taught the Taj its shape, colonial New Delhi's avenues, and the spice lanes of Chandni Chowk. Most trips to North India start here. Give it two days and it stops being just an airport.

📅 Best time: Oct & Feb–Mar

Jaipur

India at its most royal: hilltop forts, honey-stone palaces, the lace-like Hawa Mahal, and bazaars piled with block-print, gemstones and sweets. Rajasthan's classic first stop: maharaja grandeur and the best shopping in the north.

Scale or colour: who each city suits

Delhi suits a trip that wants scale and several eras at once: the Red Fort, Qutb Minar and the old city, three UNESCO sites in the guide, and quarters best seen on foot, such as Connaught Place, Lodhi Colony with Lodhi Gardens, and Hauz Khas Village above its 13th-century reservoir. A metro of more than ten lines ties them together. See the Delhi page.

Jaipur suits a trip about royal Rajasthan and shopping: forts on the hills, palaces, the lace-like Hawa Mahal, and bazaars of block-print, gems and sweets. The Walled City, founded in 1727, is a UNESCO site. On the Golden Triangle route the guide gives Delhi and Jaipur two to three nights each. One warning: nobody resells Jaipur stones at a profit, and a rickshaw driver's friendly detour to a shop is a commission.

Getting between Delhi and Jaipur

About 280 km. Approximate fares, checked in August 2026. More on the Jaipur to Delhi route page.

Vande Bharat

From New Delhi, about 3 h 40 min, ~₹740–900 in chair car or ~₹1,475–1,700 in executive. About twenty trains a day run between the cities in all.

Ajmer Shatabdi 12015

Leaves Delhi at 06:10 and reaches Jaipur at 10:35, ~₹520–700 in chair car.

Bus

RSRTC Volvo around the clock, 5.5–6 hours, ~₹660–850; private AC sleepers from ~₹500. They arrive at Sindhi Camp, which has its own metro station.

Flight

About ten flights a day from Delhi, about an hour in the air. Jaipur airport is 13 km from town, ~₹250–500 by taxi.

Seasons

Both cities run on the North Indian calendar, but Delhi has two extra caveats. Its top months are October, February and March. From November to January nights are cold (about 8°C in January), smog can push the AQI past 450 and fog delays trains and flights. May and June are the months to avoid, with heatwaves above 45°C.

Jaipur is semi-arid. Its best months run from October to March, and it is very dry then: in March humidity is about 34%. April to June brings extreme heat, with May averaging 41°C in the day, and May and June are marked to avoid.

Both in one trip: October, February and March are best for both. The winter smog warning in the guide applies to Delhi, not Jaipur.

Getting around and what it costs

Fares are approximate, checked in August 2026.

Delhi

The metro, ~₹11–64 a ride, runs roughly 05:30–23:30, and for a sightseeing day the tourist card (~₹200 a day, ~₹500 for three) is simpler than single tickets. In the lanes of Old Delhi e-rickshaws (~₹20–50) cover the last stretch from the metro exit. A cab hailed off the street asks 3–10 times the fair price, so book through an app.

Jaipur

The Pink Line metro (~₹10–30, 06:00–22:00) ends at Badi Chaupar, walking distance from Hawa Mahal and the City Palace; a tourist card is about ₹150 a day. City bus AC1 passes Amber Fort for the price of a city ticket. Autos ~₹100–200 in the centre; a driver for the day ~₹1,200–1,800.

Languages

Delhi: Hindi, English, Punjabi and Urdu. Jaipur: Hindi, Rajasthani and English.
