Golden Triangle

Empire, love and colour: the three cities that explain North India

Days6–9
Distance~750 km

The classic first route through India, and the one the country itself keeps pointing at. Delhi gives you the empires, Agra the single building the whole world travels for, Jaipur the colour and the forts. Short hops between them (the longest leg is under five hours), which is why it works even on a first, cautious trip.

Stops

Delhi · 2–3 nights

You land here and you start here. Three empires left their capitals on top of each other, and the contrast makes everything after it legible.

1 hr 40 min · 230 km — Gatimaan Express, Vande Bharat or Shatabdi from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantt. By car the Yamuna Expressway takes 3–3.5 hours.

Agra · 1–2 nights

One night, not a day trip: sunrise at the Taj is the single strongest thing Agra has, and it is only available to those who wake up here.

4–5 hrs · 240 km — The classic stop on the way is Fatehpur Sikri: the abandoned Mughal capital sits almost exactly on the line between the two cities.

Jaipur · 2–3 nights

The colour after the marble. Forts, the pink city and the craft workshops: the leg of the triangle that is least about monuments and most about living streets.

4–5 hrs · 280 km — Shatabdi or Vande Bharat close the triangle back to Delhi. AC buses take 5–6 hours; the flight is about an hour.
