Chandigarh railway station (Chandigarh Junction)

← Chandigarh

Chandigarh Junction (CDG) is the city's railway station, about 8 km from the Sector 17 centre on the Panchkula edge of the city. From Delhi there are twelve to fourteen trains a day, the fastest taking about three hours, and from the station a cab, an auto or a CTU bus takes you into the sectors.

Chandigarh Junction

Twelve to fourteen trains a day from Delhi. Besides the morning Vande Bharat there are two evening Shatabdis, so the city works as a day trip in either direction.

Best option

Volvo to ISBT Sector 17

Coaches from Delhi every half hour or so, arriving right in the middle of the grid. Slower than the train but you leave whenever you like.

The station in brief

Chandigarh Junction (station code CDG) belongs to the Ambala division of Northern Railway. It opened in 1954 and has six platforms. It stands in Industrial Area 1 at Daria, on the eastern side of the city towards Panchkula, about 8 km from the Sector 17 centre. The main line is the Delhi–Kalka line through Ambala; a second line, opened in 2013, runs west through Mohali to Sahnewal near Ludhiana.

The station is being rebuilt under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with two station buildings, one on the Chandigarh side and one on the Panchkula side, joined by an air concourse and new foot overbridges. While the work goes on, entrances and walkways may change, so leave a margin before your train.

Trains from Delhi

Delhi is the main connection: twelve to fourteen trains a day, which makes Chandigarh workable even as a day trip. The fastest is the morning Vande Bharat from New Delhi, at a little over three hours; Shatabdi Express trains also run, including in the evening. Vande Bharat fares are approximately ₹805 in chair car and ₹1,495 in executive class. Timetables change, so check the current train numbers and times on IRCTC or NTES when you book.

From the station to the city

The station is outside the sector grid, so you will need transport to reach any hotel.

  1. Uber, Ola or Rapido

The default in Chandigarh: distances between sectors are long. Drivers occasionally strike, so have a backup if you have a train to catch.

  2. Auto-rickshaw

Easy to find, but the meters are mostly decorative: agree the fare before you get in. A short ride is approximately ₹100–150.

  3. CTU city bus

Around seventy routes across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, approximately ₹20–50 a ride, running from about 06:00 to 22:00. After 22:00 there is no public transport at all.

Bus stands and onward travel

The main bus stand, ISBT Sector 17, is in the city centre, about 8 km from the station; Volvo coaches from Delhi's Kashmere Gate arrive there every 30 to 60 minutes. Buses to Manali, Shimla and Dharamshala leave from a different terminal, ISBT Sector 43, so check which one your ticket names before you take a taxi.

For the Kalka–Shimla toy train, the narrow-gauge line starts at Kalka, about 30 km away; trains from Chandigarh reach it via Chandi Mandir. The airport (IXC) is about 7 km from the station, on the Mohali side. More: how to get to Chandigarh, getting around and Chandigarh airport.

Useful to know

Chandigarh addresses read like coordinates: "SCO 151, Sector 28" tells the driver the sector, and the grid does the rest. The station has waiting rooms, retiring rooms and refreshment rooms. Gurudwara Nada Sahib in Panchkula is about 8 km from the station if you have time before a train.
