Chandigarh airport: how to get to the city
Chandigarh's only airport, Shaheed Bhagat Singh International (IXC), is not in Chandigarh itself: its terminal stands on the Mohali side of the runway, about 12 km from Sector 17. A prepaid taxi or an app cab takes roughly 20–30 minutes to the centre; the airport bus costs a fraction of that if you travel light.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh International (IXC)
The terminal is on the Mohali side, 12 km from Sector 17 and about half an hour away. From Delhi the flight rarely beats the train once you count check-in.
About the airport
The airport is officially Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, named after the freedom fighter; its codes are IXC (IATA) and VICG (ICAO). It is in Jhiurheri, in Mohali district of Punjab, and shares its single runway with the Indian Air Force's Chandigarh Air Force Station.
It is run by Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL), a joint venture of the Airports Authority of India (51%) and the governments of Punjab and Haryana (24.5% each). Civil flights used to operate from the civil enclave of the Air Force station; the present passenger terminal, built on the south side of the runway, opened in 2015. Departures are on the first floor and arrivals on the ground floor. After a runway upgrade completed in 2019, the airport is available for 24-hour operations.
From the airport to the city
Prices are approximate.
Prepaid taxi
There is a prepaid taxi desk at the airport. Approximately ₹400–800 to the city, about 20–30 minutes.
Uber or Ola
Usually cheaper than the prepaid desk, with the same journey time.
Airport bus
Runs into the sectors for roughly ₹20–100, about a tenth of a taxi. Fine with light luggage and no hurry. City CTU buses stop around 22:00, so for a late arrival take a taxi.
Plane or train from Delhi
From Delhi the flight rarely beats the train once check-in is counted. Twelve to fourteen trains a day run from Delhi to Chandigarh Junction. Besides a morning Vande Bharat there are two evening Shatabdis; check current timetables with Indian Railways (IRCTC) before booking. Volvo coaches from Kashmere Gate take about five hours. Details are on the railway station and how to get to Chandigarh pages. For longer distances, such as Mumbai, there are direct flights.
Practical tips
- Addresses work like coordinates: 'SCO 151, Sector 28' tells the driver everything, because the sector number fixes the location on Le Corbusier's grid.
- Heading to the mountains? Buses to Manali, Shimla and Dharamshala leave from ISBT Sector 43, not Sector 17, so check the terminal before booking a cab.
- December and January are the fog months; leave extra time around winter flights. Extra approach lighting was added in 2021 to help landings in fog.
- Getting around the city afterwards is covered on getting around Chandigarh.
