Cafes in Chandigarh: where to go and what to order

← Chandigarh

Most of Chandigarh's best-known cafes and bakeries sit within a few blocks of each other in Sectors 7 to 10, so one sector can easily become a cafe crawl. For the cheapest and most old-fashioned cup in the city, go to the Indian Coffee House in Sector 17; for specialty coffee roasted in-house, Beige Cafe in Sector 7 or DoubleShot Coffee Roasters in Mohali.

Backpackers CafeThe defining cafe of Chandigarh's Sector 8-9 scene: award-winning, spotless and welcoming to solo travellers and groups alike.
Beige CafeThe tricity's most reliable specialty-coffee-and-bakery room, calm enough to actually work in.
Café De PiccoloArguably the most polished small-plate Italian-cafe experience in the city, in a genuinely charming space.
Café JC'sThe safest 'you can't go wrong' all-rounder cafe in Chandigarh, beloved across age groups.
DoubleShot Coffee RoastersOne of Mohali's most credible from-scratch specialty roasters for genuine coffee people.
Indian Coffee HouseA heritage cooperative cafe and living landmark; cheap, atmospheric and a cultural must-do for any first visit.
The Willow CafeA pretty, established brunch garden that pairs naturally with a Sector-10 cafe crawl.

Sectors 7 to 10: the cafe quarter

Sector 10-D has the city's cafe row. Café JC's has wooden seating and an outdoor section strung with fairy lights. Also on the row, The Willow Cafe is a long-standing sky-blue room with vintage decor and a garden patio. The Government Museum and Art Gallery is in the same sector, so a museum morning ends naturally with coffee.

Sector 9 has the most cafes on this list. Backpackers Cafe is the travel-themed one, with maps and murals, all-day breakfasts, pizza and coffee, plus a bar menu. In the Sector 9-D inner market, Café De Piccolo is a pocket-sized 'cottage' with chessboard-tile floors and wood-fired thin-crust pizzas. The tiny original counter of Nik Baker's, one of the city's best-known bakeries, is here too.

Sector 8 has Monica's, the tricity's original European bakery, started in a garage in 1994: more than 40 kinds of preservative-free cakes, and éclairs. In Sector 7-C, Beige Cafe roasts its own specialty coffee and bakes sourdough and croissants in small daily batches.

Cakes and pastries

Monica's for éclairs and fresh-cream cakes, Nik Baker's for mango cheesecake, lemon tarts and ice-cream cakes, The Big Bro in Sector 9, Panchkula, for its dessert case. More in sweets.

The Indian Coffee House, Sector 17

The Sector 17 branch belongs to the worker-cooperative chain that has fed India's students, journalists and chess players since the 1950s, and it is a well-preserved example: waiters in fan-crested turbans, formica tables and very low prices. Order the strong, sweet filter coffee with a dosa, idli or plain toast and take your time. Nothing here is gourmet, and that is the point. Sector 17 is the city centre, so it fits easily into a walk around the Sector 17 plaza and its shops.

Practical tips

  • A sector is walkable from end to end, but the distances between sectors are not: use Uber, Ola or Rapido between them, and remember that city buses stop around 22:00. Details are on getting around Chandigarh.
  • Addresses read like coordinates: the sector number tells the driver where to go.
  • Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula form one 'tricity'. DoubleShot is in Mohali and The Big Bro in Panchkula, so check which city an address is in before you order a cab.
