Chandigarh's seasons at a glance
Temperatures and rainfall are monthly averages from the climate chart above; the administration describes four seasons: summer from mid-March to mid-June, rains from late June to mid-September, a post-monsoon transition to mid-November, then winter.
October–November: the best weather
October averages about 32 °C by day and 18 °C at night, with one rainy day in the month; November cools to about 27 °C and is almost completely dry. It is the most reliable stretch for long walks between sectors and the open plazas of the Capitol Complex.
December–January: cool, with morning fog
Highs are about 22 °C in December. January is the coldest month, and the administration puts its average night low near 4 °C. Fog is the hazard of these two months, so keep some slack in early-morning plans and pack a warm layer.
February–March: the second window
Highs climb from about 23 to 28 °C and rain is rare. On the Shivalik slopes behind the city the dhak (flame of the forest) flowers orange in February and March, and the Rose Garden holds its festival in February.
April–June: heat
April averages about 35 °C. In May and June mean highs are around 37–39 °C and can rise to 44 °C. If these are your dates, see the outdoor sights early and spend the afternoon indoors, in a museum or the Elante mall.
July–September: monsoon
July and August each get about 275 mm of rain over 10–11 rainy days, and the air is humid at 33–34 °C. Downpours can be extreme: in July 2023 about 322 mm fell in a single day and parts of the city flooded. September dries out towards the end.
The day of the week matters too
Mondays are a closing day for much of the city. The Government Museum, the Architecture Museum, the International Dolls Museum, Pierre Jeanneret's house and the Butterfly Park are closed on Mondays, and so is Chhatbir Zoo, which also closes on 26 January, 15 August and 2 October. The Bird Park near Sukhna is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The Capitol Complex is seen only on a free guided tour with photo ID, at 10:00, 12:00 and 15:00. Interiors can be entered Monday to Friday; at weekends the tour is exterior only, and it does not run on gazetted holidays. The plazas are wide and almost without shade: hard going in June, ideal in winter.
For nature, winter mornings bring migratory waterbirds to Sukhna Lake, the forest treks behind it are best at first light in the cooler months, and the Butterfly Park is at its best from March to October. Day-by-day weather is on the Chandigarh weather page.
Festivals and fairs by season
The big religious festivals here are local, neighbourhood events that do not fill the hotels. More on the Chandigarh festivals page.
Lohri (January)
The Punjabi bonfire night on the eve of Makar Sankranti, lit in sector parks, housing courtyards and on the Panjab University campus rather than at one public venue. Markets sell rewari, gajak and groundnuts in the days before. Dates: 13 January 2027 (expected).
Rose Festival (February)

Vaisakhi (April)
Around Chandigarh it belongs to the gurdwaras: Nada Sahib in Panchkula and Amb Sahib in Mohali fill for the day, and Anandpur Sahib, where the Khalsa was founded, is about 100 km away. Dates: 14 April 2027.
Late autumn fairs (October–November)
Chandigarh Tourism lists the National Craft Mela at Kalagram in October, though editions have also run from late November into December, so check the year's dates. The Chandigarh Carnival is held on the last weekend of November, and Guru Nanak Jayanti brings processions to the sector gurdwaras: 24 November 2026.
Chrysanthemum Show (December)
A seasonal flower show listed by Chandigarh Tourism for December, a good fit with the cool, dry weather.
