Ghee podi idli in Bangalore
In Bangalore ghee podi idli is a standard tiffin-room order: idli coated in podi, a coarse powder of roasted lentils and dried chillies, and soaked in melted ghee. Two places in our base are known for it: The Rameshwaram Cafe, the new-generation counter with queue tickets and late hours, and Umesh Refreshments, a standing-only room in Seshadripuram where it follows the house dosa.

Both are cheap (price level ₹). They differ in almost everything else.
The Rameshwaram Cafe, Indiranagar (also JP Nagar, Brookefield)
A new-generation darshini (quick-service counter) that draws crowds mostly for its ghee podi idli and a podi-coated ghee dosa. A gleaming open kitchen, electronic queue tickets and high hygiene standards; cards and UPI are accepted. Crowds can mean an hour's wait at peak times, so go early or late. It stays open till night, which answers the question of where to find idli after dark.
Umesh Refreshments, Kumara Park West (Seshadripuram)
About ten square metres, standing only, no seats and no cards. People come first for the ghee podi masala dosa, soft under a glossy slick of butter, and order the ghee podi idli as the second plate. Bring cash.
Podi on a Bangalore plate
Podi is called chutney pudi in Kannada and "gunpowder" in English, for its heat. Elsewhere in the South it usually sits on the side of the plate, mixed with oil into a small heap. Bangalore's tiffin rooms do the mixing in the kitchen: the idli arrives already coated and glistening, sometimes whole, sometimes cut up. The same pairing of podi and ghee turns up at lunch too: at Nagarjuna on Residency Road, an Andhra banana-leaf meal house since 1984, it is poured over rice.
What goes into the powder, and why the dish is not vegan, is on the ghee podi idli page.
✅ Ordering tips
- Heat: podi is built on dried red chillies, so it is hotter than idli with chutney; how much hotter depends on the kitchen.
- Without dairy: podi is also commonly mixed with sesame oil instead of ghee; ask whether the kitchen will make it that way.
- Timing: go early to beat the queue at Rameshwaram, or late, since it is open till night.
- Cash: essential at Umesh Refreshments.
