Ajmer Junction station and the bus stand
Ajmer's main station is Ajmer Junction, code AII, in the heart of the city on the Delhi–Jaipur–Ahmedabad line. The dargah is about two kilometres away, a fifteen-minute walk through Dargah Bazaar. Buses are run by RSRTC, the Rajasthan state transport corporation, from the Central Bus Stand: to Jaipur about every half hour, to Pushkar every 15–30 minutes. Below: the station, the trains, the way to the shrine and the bus stand.
Ajmer Junction (AII)
A major junction on the Delhi–Ahmedabad line with about thirty trains a week from Delhi alone, and the dargah is a fifteen-minute walk from the platform.
Best option
RSRTC from Jaipur
Buses leave every half hour, so there is no timetable to plan around, and many of them carry straight on to Pushkar.
Ajmer Junction (AII)
The station belongs to the Ajmer division of North Western Railway and has six platforms. Three lines meet here: the New Delhi–Ahmedabad main line, the Jaipur–Ahmedabad line and the line to Chittaurgarh, with a branch to Pushkar. Rajasthan Tourism notes that most trains on the Delhi–Jaipur–Ahmedabad–Mumbai route stop at Ajmer, and the Dargah Committee lists direct rail links with Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Abu Road and Jodhpur.
The city has smaller stations too: Madar Junction (MDJN), Daurai (DOZ) and Adarsh Nagar (AHO). For the dargah and the old city, check that your ticket says Ajmer Junction.
Step out of the main entrance and the sandstone Victoria Jubilee Clock Tower of 1887 stands across the road; the Shahid Smarak, a memorial to the city's martyrs with fountains and lights, is also right in front of the station. The quarter around it grew when Ajmer became headquarters of the Rajputana Railway, and the railway still runs a major workshop here.
Trains to Ajmer
Fares are approximate.
From Delhi: about 5.5–6.5 hours
A morning Shatabdi, a Jan Shatabdi or an overnight train. Approximately ₹1,000–1,100 in chair car on the Shatabdi, from about ₹190 on the Jan Shatabdi and from about ₹230 in sleeper class.
From Jaipur: about 2 hours
Dozens of trains a day, from about ₹100 in a seating class. The Vande Bharat from Delhi also runs through Jaipur to Ajmer.
During the Urs
Special trains are added for the festival, and Urs-week trains sell out quickly. Indian Railways opens reserved tickets 60 days ahead, so for the Urs (11–16 December 2026, expected) the ticket is the first thing to book.
From the platform to the dargah
- On foot, about 15 minutes
One and a half to two kilometres through Dargah Bazaar, and the walk is half the point. The inner lanes by the shrine take nothing on wheels at all.
- By auto or e-rickshaw
Approximately ₹50–100 from the station to the dargah. There are no meters in Ajmer, so agree the fare before you get in. Worth it with luggage or in the heat, and for Ana Sagar and the Jain temple on the far side of town.
- By cycle rickshaw
Still working the station and the bazaar for about the same money as an auto: slower, but better through the market crowd.
Ajmer bus stand (RSRTC)
Ajmer's main bus stand is the RSRTC Central Bus Stand, listed in the corporation's directory as Ajmer (CBS). Rajasthan Tourism notes that there is a cloakroom at the main bus stand, useful if you are passing through for the day.
Jaipur. Government buses run between Jaipur and Ajmer through the day, about every half hour, so there is no timetable to plan around. In Jaipur they leave from the Central Bus Stand at Sindhi Camp, where platform 1 handles the Ajmer route, including AC, deluxe and Volvo services. The ride takes about two hours; ordinary buses cost approximately ₹150–165, Volvos more. Many buses carry on to Pushkar.
Pushkar. The local bus over the Nag Pahar pass leaves the main bus stand every 15–30 minutes, takes 30–40 minutes and costs approximately ₹25–35, bought on board. Some runs pick up near the railway station, which saves crossing town. If a booking app shows around ₹400 to Pushkar, that is a long-distance coach passing through, not the local bus.
Further afield. There are buses from Ajmer to the main towns of Rajasthan and beyond, and less frequent coaches to Delhi. RSRTC tickets can be booked on the corporation's own site, rsrtconline.rajasthan.gov.in.
Arriving late, and touts
After about ten in the evening the rickshaws thin out and the buses stop. If your train arrives late, arrange a car through your hotel in advance. Around the dargah, insistent "guides" and collections for the chadar (the cloth offered at the tomb) are common: any donation is voluntary and its size is yours to set. Flying in instead?
