Ajmer airport: Kishangarh to the city

← Ajmer

Ajmer's airport is Kishangarh (KQH), a small domestic airport about 27 km north-east of the city, and the only practical way in from it is a taxi of 40–50 minutes. Routes are few and the schedule changes, so many travellers fly to Jaipur, 135 km away, and finish the journey by train in about two hours.

Kishangarh (KQH), 27 km away

A small airport with a handful of routes and an unstable schedule. The real air gateway is Jaipur, 135 km out; from there a taxi takes two and a half to three hours.

Around the dargah, insistent "guides" and collections for the chadar: any donation here is voluntary and its size is yours to set.

Kishangarh Airport (KQH): what it is

Ajmer has no airport of its own inside the city. The airport that serves it, and is often called Ajmer airport, is Kishangarh (IATA code KQH), about 27 km north-east of Ajmer on National Highway 448. It is run by the Airports Authority of India and has been in operation since October 2017, with regular flights by ATR-72 and Q-400 turboprops since October 2018.

It is a small domestic airport: one terminal and a 2,000 m runway built for daytime operation of smaller aircraft. The terminal is decorated in the local style, with marble murals and Bani Thani portraits from the Kishangarh school of miniature painting. The schedule is the thing to watch: there are only a handful of routes, and they change, so check what is actually flying for your dates before you plan around it.

From the airport to the city

Taxi is the only practical way in from Kishangarh.

  1. Book ahead or take a waiting taxi

There are almost no app cabs at Kishangarh. Either book the transfer in advance, for example through your hotel, or take one of the taxis waiting at arrivals.

  2. Expect 40–50 minutes

The drive to Ajmer takes about 40–50 minutes. A sedan costs approximately ₹1,500 and an SUV approximately ₹2,000; agree the price before you leave.

  3. Arriving late

After about ten in the evening Ajmer's rickshaws thin out and the buses stop, so on a late flight have the car arranged before you land.

The other way in: fly to Jaipur

For most travellers the real air gateway to Ajmer is Jaipur, 135 km away, which has far more flights. From Jaipur there are three ways on:

  • Taxi: two and a half to three hours, approximately ₹2,500–3,500.
  • Train: dozens of trains a day from Jaipur to Ajmer Junction, about two hours, from approximately ₹100 in seating class. Ajmer Junction is a fifteen-minute walk from the Dargah. Details are on Ajmer railway station.
  • Bus: RSRTC coaches from Jaipur's main bus stand every half hour, about two hours, approximately ₹150–165, more for Volvo; many carry on to Pushkar.

Jaipur's airport and its links to the city are on Jaipur airport, and every route into Ajmer, including the direct trains from Delhi, is on how to get to Ajmer.

Flying in for the Urs

During the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti (11–16 December 2026, expected) around five lakh pilgrims come to Ajmer, and transport is the first thing to run out. Plan the journey about two months ahead, hold rooms early, and allow for the dates moving by a day, because the start depends on the sighting of the moon.
