Best time to visit Ajmer
The best time to visit Ajmer is October to February: dry weather, days of about 24–34 °C and cool nights, down to around 10 °C in January. From March the heat builds to about 40 °C in May, and July and August bring most of the year's rain. The dates that change the city most are not a season but the Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, which moves through the calendar from year to year.

Ajmer month by month
Temperatures and rainfall are monthly averages for the Ajmer weather station. Rajasthan Tourism names October to February as the best months and advises avoiding March to May, when the temperature can pass 40 °C.
| October–November | The season opens. About 34 °C by day in October and 30 °C in November, nights 21 and 16 °C, almost no rain. Foy Sagar is still full after the monsoon. |
| December–February | The coolest months: 24–27 °C by day, 10–14 °C at night, dry. Bring a warm layer for early mornings. Winter brings migratory waterfowl to Foy Sagar and the Ana Sagar shore. |
| March | The turn of the season: about 32 °C by day and 19 °C at night, still dry. Good for the city in the mornings and evenings; Rajasthan Tourism already counts March among the hot months. |
| April–June | The hot months. About 38 °C in April and 39–40 °C in May and June, nights of 24–28 °C. May and June are the months to avoid; the ridge walks and Taragarh have almost no shade. |
| July–August | The monsoon: about 180 mm of rain a month over nine rainy days, humidity near 70%, days of 32–34 °C. The Aravalli slopes turn green. |
| September | The rain eases to about 87 mm, days back to 34 °C. Foy Sagar is at its fullest from now into winter. |
The Urs and other crowded days
The Urs is the death anniversary of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, kept as a festival, and the Dargah Committee says it is held every year from the 1st to the 6th day of the Islamic month of Rajab. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the dates shift about eleven days earlier each year, and the start depends on the sighting of the moon. Next Urs: 11–16 December 2026 (expected).
For those six days the shrine stays open almost around the clock, qawwals sing every night and lakhs of pilgrims come; the district administration arranges stay, food and security on that scale, and special trains run. For a traveller this means two things. If the Urs is the reason for the trip, hold the train first (reserved tickets open 60 days ahead), then a room, and arrive a day or two before 1 Rajab. If it is not, plan Ajmer for another week: rooms near the dargah go months ahead and prices rise sharply. Pushkar, over the hill, is the usual overflow.
Every week has its own rhythm too. Thursdays and especially Fridays are the busiest days at the dargah: Thursday is the saint's commemorative day, and Friday brings the Jumma prayers. Next door, the Pushkar Camel Fair (17–24 November 2026) fills Pushkar rather than Ajmer, but it is worth knowing if you plan to stay there.
Ajmer in the monsoon
July and August are the wettest months, with about nine rainy days each. The monsoon is when Ajmer's outskirts are at their best. At the Ajaypal Ji temple in Ajaysar, 12 km out, the seasonal streams and small falls run from July into September and the slopes go green. Foy Sagar fills from the late monsoon and stays full into winter. The Nag Pahar ridge trail, by contrast, is comfortable only between October and March.
The best hours of the day
- First light: the marble Baradari on Ana Sagar takes the low sun best, and birds work the lake before the city is up. The Nag Pahar trail is walked at dawn for the sunrise, and only between October and March.
- Early or late: Taragarh and the hilltops have almost no shade.
- Mornings or after five: the shops of Nala Bazar shut for a long lunch through the afternoon heat.
- Evening at the dargah: Roshnee, the lighting of the lamps, takes place daily fifteen minutes before the evening prayer, and the fullest qawwali singing comes after it. See qawwali in Ajmer.
