Braj Chaurasi Kos Parikrama

The maximal version of the same idea: instead of circling a hill or a town, you circle the entire landscape of Krishna's childhood (Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul and dozens of villages, ponds and groves in between). Worth knowing about mainly so you understand what the groups of walkers with bundles on their heads are doing.

Organised yatras run mainly in the cooler months and around major Krishna festivals. This is a group undertaking with a fixed departure date, not something you start on a whim.

Vrindavan Parikrama

A walk around the whole town, keeping it on your right: the same gesture as circling a temple, scaled up to the place itself. The path runs partly along the Yamuna and partly through streets, past small shrines the whole way. Doing it is how residents mark a day as belonging to Krishna rather than to errands.

Any day of the year. Best started between 05:00 and 06:30, before the heat and the traffic; October to March is the comfortable season. Avoid the middle of the day from April to June.
