Where to stay in Udupi

← Udupi

Choose your base by what the trip is for. Pilgrims do best in the temple core, where the mathas (monasteries) run their own guest houses on and around Car Street, one of them 150 m from the Krishna Matha. For a short first visit, a hotel in central Udupi keeps the temple a walk away. Malpe, 6 km out, is the beach base, and Manipal, 4–5 km up the road, has the chain hotels with pools.

Areas to stay, and who they suit

Places in each area are in the list above; prices are on the booking sites.

Temple core: Car Street and the mathas

For a trip built around darshan. Sri Vidyamanya Guest House of the Palimaru Matha, one of the eight Ashta Mathas, has around 35 rooms 150 m from the Krishna Matha; Kshetravaasa of the Puthige Matha is newer, with AC and non-AC rooms in two blocks; the Adamaru Matha guest house is simpler. Expect a vegetarian food culture and temple bells in the morning; book directly with the matha (Sri Vidyamanya takes bookings by phone).

Central Udupi: first visit, short stay

Hotels a walk or a short rickshaw ride from the temple. Udupi Heritage Inn is a restored house more than a hundred years old; Samanvay Boutique Hotel is small and known for its breakfasts; The Ocean Pearl is a dependable 3-star with 45 rooms, pure-veg and Jain dining and a 10-minute ride to the station; Venky's Stay Inn is a plain budget option.

Malpe: by the sea

Six kilometres from town, for a beach trip. Paradise Isle Beach Resort faces the sand and the St Mary's Island jetty, with two pools, a spa and water sports, though the building is showing its age. Island Bay View Inn is a small retreat in a coconut grove on Malpe-Thottam beach, with suites looking at St Mary's Island and a pool. Vishram Homestay is a family homestay near the beach. Best from November to March, when the sea is open.

Manipal: chain hotels and the campus

The university town 4–5 km up the road, joined to Udupi by buses every couple of minutes. Country Inn & Suites by Radisson has 54 rooms, a spa and an infinity pool, about 4 km from Udupi station; Fortune Valley View (ITC Hotels' group) sits on the Manipal Academy campus with 68 rooms and an outdoor pool; Essentia Manipal Inn is a modern midrange hotel on the corridor between the two towns. The pick for service and facilities rather than the sea.

Out of town: quiet and character

SaffronStays Suvarna Sangam is a riverfront villa on a private island about 7.5 km from town, with boat rides and roughly half an hour to Malpe or Kaup. Heritage House Lakshani is an old house let whole in rural greenery, with two AC bedrooms and breakfast. Nearer in, Hi5 by Beach County is a small homestay in residential Laxmi Nagar, and Atithi Homestay has a garden about 3 km from the temple and 4 km from Malpe.

Before you book

  • Matha guest houses are booked directly — They are run for devotees: book with the matha itself and confirm before you arrive.
  • Beach stays follow the sea season — From June to September the sea is closed and the St Mary's ferry stops, so a Malpe base makes most sense from November to March. See Udupi weather.
  • Arriving by night train — The station is in Indrali, about 3 km from Car Street, with a prepaid rickshaw counter at the exit: about ₹50–100 into the centre.
  • By budget — Separate lists of budget hotels and luxury hotels are on their own pages, and the three matha guest houses are gathered on the ashram stay page.
