Udupi weather

Best time: Nov–Feb

← Udupi

On the coast at 27 m, Udupi barely changes temperature through the year: daytime highs stay between 29 and 34 °C and nights between 21 and 26 °C. What changes is the rain. June and July each bring around a metre of it, on 23–28 days a month, while January to March are almost completely dry. The best window is November to February, which is also when the sea is calm and open.

What each season is like

November–February, the dry season. Days of 33 °C, nights of 21–23 °C, humidity in the low sixties by December and January. November still has a few showers (about 77 mm on 4 days); December to February get almost none. The sea is open.

March–May, the hot months. Highs reach 34 °C and nights stay warm, 24–26 °C. March is still dry; April brings the first showers; May turns humid and wet, with about 189 mm on 7 days as the monsoon approaches. The sea gets rough from April.

June–September, the monsoon. Days cool to 29–30 °C, but humidity sits at 83–87% and the rain is heavy: about 999 mm in June, 1,016 mm in July, 687 mm in August and 344 mm in September. Swimming is closed and the ferry to St Mary's Island stops.

October, the shoulder. Still about 234 mm of rain on 10 days, with highs of 31 °C; the sea stays rough until November.

Best time to visit Udupi

November to February is the best time: dry, sunny and as cool as this coast gets at night, with the sea open from November to March. March and April are rated good too, only hotter, and September and October count as good for the town itself while the sea is still closed or rough. May and the core monsoon months, June to August, are the ones to avoid if you can. For the falls, the Jomlu Teertha window runs from September to February. From November to May a Yakshagana troupe (the night-long dance-drama of the coast) plays somewhere near Udupi most nights. More on planning by season is on the best time to visit Udupi page.

Festivals and the weather they fall in

Udupi's own festivals land in two very different seasons.

January, dry season

Udupi marks Makara Sankramana, the day Madhvacharya is said to have installed the Krishna image, with the Saptotsava week: evening float festivals (teppotsava) on the temple tank and three chariots on Car Street on Sankramana night, 10–16 January 2027 (expected). In even years the Paryaya follows, when one matha hands the two-year temple duty to the next: 17–18 January 2028 (expected). Both fall in the driest, most comfortable weeks of the year.

Late monsoon

Vittla Pindi, the day after Udupi's own Janmashtami, falls in the rains: 24–25 August 2027 (expected). A clay Krishna rides the golden chariot around Car Street, curd pots are broken overhead and Huli Vesha tiger dancers drum through town. Bring rain gear.

What to pack

Udupi never needs a warm layer; heat, humidity and rain are what to plan for.

  • Light cotton — Highs of 29–34 °C every month and humidity up to 87% in the monsoon call for loose, breathable clothes.
  • Rain gear from May to October — An umbrella or rain jacket and sandals that cope with water; June to August bring rain on most days.
  • Sun protection — Hat, sunscreen and water for the beaches and St Mary's Island, where there is no shade or shop.
  • Clothes for the temple — The Krishna Matha has its own rules on dress; see the temple dress code page before you pack.
