Places to visit near Udupi

← Udupi

Within 20 km of Udupi are Malpe and the basalt columns of St Mary's Island, a lighthouse at Kaup, the ruins of Barkur and Madhvacharya's birthplace at Pajaka. A day's drive reaches the Jain monoliths of Karkala and the Mookambika temple at Kollur, and Murudeshwar and Gokarna are further up the coast.

Murudeshwar

On a spit of the Karnataka coast stands one of the world's tallest Shiva statues, gazing out to sea from Kanduka hill. The draw is the jaw-dropping view, and a selfie beside the giant Shiva.

~90 km as the crow flies

Gokarna

A Karnataka temple town that doubles as a quieter Goa: pilgrims fill the ancient Mahabaleshwar shrine while a cliff path links half-moon beaches named Om and Paradise. Empty sands, sunset walks and a slower coast: Goa without the crowds.

~140 km as the crow flies

Mysore

Genteel Mysore runs on sandalwood, silk and royal pageantry: a palace that lights up with 100,000 bulbs, the hilltop Chamundi temple, and a Dasara festival that still parades elephants. The grandest palace in the south, and the home of Ashtanga yoga.

~240 km as the crow flies

Goa

India's easiest, sunniest escape: a beach for every mood, buzzing markets, Portuguese forts and churches, and a coastal pace that asks nothing of you. Party up north, slow down south: the gentlest way to fall for India.

~260 km as the crow flies

Hampi

The ghost capital of the Vijayanagara empire, strewn across a boulder moonscape on the Tungabhadra: temples, bazaars and a famous stone chariot left mid-sentence five centuries ago. One of India's most spectacular ruins, with boulder-top sunsets over the whole vanished city.

~290 km as the crow flies

Within 20 km: half a day or less

Distances are from Udupi town. Local buses run to Manipal and Malpe for approximately ₹20 or less; for the rest a rickshaw, at a price agreed in advance, is the usual way.

Malpe and St Mary's Island (6 km)

Malpe Beach is the town's beach; from it boats cross to St Mary's Island, a National Geological Monument of hexagonal basalt columns. Boats run roughly 09:00–17:00 in season, about ₹400 per adult return, and not at all from June to September. Nothing is sold on the island, so carry water.

Kemmannu and Delta Beach (10–15 km)

On the road beyond Malpe: the swaying Kemmannu Hanging Bridge over a channel of the Swarna, then the sandbar of Delta Beach at Kodi Bengre, where the estuary is calm enough for kayaks. The river mouth itself has dangerous currents; do not swim.

Pajaka and Kunjarugiri (12–13 km)

The village where Madhvacharya was born: the family house, a small temple with a foot impression in stone, four spring-fed tanks, and the Durga Parameshwari temple on the hill above, with a view almost all the way round.

Kaup lighthouse (15–17 km south)

A rocky headland with a lighthouse of 1901, old Jain shrines and a Mariamma temple. The tower opens only in a short late-afternoon window, usually quoted as about 16:00–18:00; tickets are about ₹10 for Indian citizens and ₹25 for foreigners, plus GST. Not a swimming beach.

Barkur (16 km north)

Barkur, the old Alupa capital: temples, the dark-stone Kattale Basadi and about twenty acres of fort ruins scattered through a working town. Free, but spread out and barely signposted; an auto or a local guide helps. Best October to February.

Manipal (about 5–7 km)

The university town up the road has the Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village, eighteen-odd rescued historic buildings, and Manipal End Point, a cliff-edge park over the Swarna valley at its best before sunset.

25–80 km: a half day to a full day

Distances are from Udupi town.

Padubidri Beach (about 25 km south)

Padubidri is the district's Blue Flag beach, with a marked bathing zone, showers and walkways. Busiest at sunset and on Sundays.

Anegudde and Guddattu (25–35 km north)

Two Ganesha temples on one outing: Anegudde at Kumbhashi, one of Tulu Nadu's seven mukti-sthalas, with a standing silver-plated Vinayaka; and Guddattu, where the deity stands in water in a rock cavity and the chamber is refilled with a thousand pots twice every morning, free to watch. No photography in the cave.

Karkala and Attur (35–37 km east)

A Jain morning: the 42-foot Gomateshwara (Bahubali) monolith of 1432 on a bare rock hill, 80–100 steps up, and a kilometre away the four-doored Chaturmukha Basadi of 1586. Nearby Attur has the St Lawrence Shrine Basilica, a church usually dated to 1759. All free; go early, before the granite heats up.

Jomlu Teertha (35–40 km east)

The easiest waterfall in the district, half a kilometre from the parking area near Hebri. September to February; see waterfalls near Udupi.

Kollur Mookambika (about 80 km north)

The Kollur Mookambika Temple, one of the great goddess temples of the west coast, is 2–2.5 hours each way by road: a full day. The dress code is enforced and darshan queues run long at weekends and during Navaratri.

Uppinakudru Island (near Kundapura)

Uppinakudru, in the backwaters near Kundapura and reached by ferry, is the home of Yakshagana string puppetry, kept by a handful of families. Come for that rather than for a beach.

Further along the coast and inland

Udupi works as a base in both directions along the coast: Murudeshwar (about 90 km in a straight line) is 1–1.5 hours away, Gokarna (about 140 km) about 2.5 hours, and Mangaluru about an hour. Goa is 4–5 hours by train. Mysore (about 240 km) and Hampi (about 290 km) lie across the Ghats: better as the next stop than as a day out.

When to go

October to February suits almost everything: Barkur and Delta Beach are at their best, waterfalls still run, and from November the St Mary's ferry sails. From June to September the island is closed and the sea is off limits; the temples stay open. More on the best time to visit Udupi.
