Breakfast in Udupi

← Udupi

Udupi gave its name to the South Indian vegetarian restaurant, and breakfast here is the classic tiffin: goli baje, idli, a masala dosa and filter coffee, at a counter beside the Krishna Matha or in a dosa hall in Manipal. The list above has six places, all pure vegetarian. Here is what to order, where each one is, and how to fit breakfast around the temple morning.

Cafe 7 BeesManipal's go-to pure-veg student cafe for a cheap, tasty coffee-and-snacks hangout.
Diana RestaurantThe iconic, purely-vegetarian home of Udupi's famous Gadbad ice cream, and a must-do dessert stop.
Kediyoor HotelA hygienic, comfortable pure-veg hotel restaurant near the temple, known for its buttery Davanagere benne dosa.
Mitra Samaj BhojanalayaThe spiritual home of Udupi tiffin: a 75-year-old temple-side institution famed for goli baje and bullet idli.
Pai TiffinsThe definitive Manipal tiffin institution: crisp coconut-oil dosas and goli baje in a Krishna-mural hall.
Woodlands RestaurantA heritage pure-veg dining room by the temple whose masala dosa and filter coffee are Udupi benchmarks.

What to order

An Udupi breakfast is fried, steamed or griddled rice-and-lentil batter with chutney and sambar (lentil and vegetable stew). The dishes worth knowing by name:

Goli baje

Deep-fried balls of a batter of flour and curd, soft inside, eaten warm with coconut chutney; a breakfast dish of the Tulu coast. Mitra Samaj and Pai Tiffins are the names for them.

Masala dosa

The dish Udupi's temple kitchens sent out into the world. Woodlands serves it glossy with ghee, Pai Tiffins fries it crisp in coconut oil, and Kediyoor's restaurant is known for the Davanagere benne dosa, made with butter.

Idli, three ways

Steamed cakes of fermented rice and lentil batter. Mitra Samaj serves small bullet idlis in sambar, Pai Tiffins does podi idli (tossed in spiced lentil powder), and kotte kadubu is idli steamed in jackfruit leaves.

Neer dosa

"Water dosa" (neer is water in Tulu and Kannada): a thin, soft dosa of rice batter that, unlike most dosas, is not fermented. It comes from the Tulu coast.

Mangalore buns

Not buns at all: soft, slightly sweet deep-fried puris made with flour and ripe banana, from the Udupi-Mangaluru coast. On the menu at Pai Tiffins.

Where to go: the temple square, the bus stand, Manipal

Around the Krishna Matha. Mitra Samaj Bhojanalaya is a tiny counter on Car Street right beside the matha, run by the Holla family since 1947. Everything is cooked sattvic, meaning without onion or garlic. Woodlands Restaurant, a few minutes away, is the comfortable family room with a dozen kinds of dosa and a South Indian thali; at weekends expect a short wait. Kediyoor Hotel's Gokula Krishna restaurant in Brahmagiri is the air-conditioned, more polished option near the temple.

By the bus stand. Diana Restaurant, near the KSRTC bus stand and Kalpana Theatre, has fed Udupi for about sixty years: masala dosa, veg cutlets and dahi vada (lentil dumplings in yoghurt), and the gadbad ice cream invented here in the 1960s. Overnight sleeper buses from Bengaluru arrive in the town itself, so it is handy after a night on the road.

Manipal. The university town is 4–5 km away, with local buses every couple of minutes for under about ₹20. Pai Tiffins is its best-known tiffin room, a hall painted with scenes from Krishna's life. Cafe 7 Bees near the MIT campus is a student café (pasta, burgers, shakes, ginger tea) rather than a tiffin room, and it gets busy in the evenings.

Prices run from ₹ at the counters to ₹₹ at Kediyoor and Diana.

How to time the morning

Go early: Mitra Samaj is a small counter and fills up quickly. Breakfast pairs naturally with morning darshan at the Krishna Matha, a few steps from the Car Street counters.

The temple's own free meal, annadana, is not a breakfast: it is served at lunch, roughly 12:00–14:30, and again at dinner, roughly 20:00–21:30, with timings shifting on festival days. So tiffin in town in the morning, the meal on a banana leaf at the temple at midday. More in prasadam in Udupi.
