Getting there

Mumbai to Goa

~7 h 45, up to ~10 h in the monsoon

The Konkan Railway is the classic way from Mumbai down to Goa: the Vande Bharat by day in about 7 h 45 min, or the Konkan Kanya overnight. Sleeper buses fill in when trains are sold out, and flights land at two different Goan airports. Whatever you take, the decision that saves the most time is made in Goa: which station or airport is nearest your beach.

✅ Which station in Goa: three stations, three different Goas

Getting off at the wrong station adds about an hour and a taxi ride across the state.

  • Thivim: the northern beaches — The station for Calangute and the north. Both the Vande Bharat and the Konkan Kanya stop here before Madgaon.
  • Karmali: Panaji and Old Goa — The station for Panaji. The Konkan Kanya stops here; the Vande Bharat does not.
  • Madgaon (Margao): the south — The main junction and the end of both trains from Mumbai; the station for the southern beaches.
  • Vasco da Gama — The terminus of a separate line, not of the Konkan Railway; rarely the stop you want.

Day train or night train

The Vande Bharat leaves Mumbai CSMT and runs to Madgaon in chair car, six days a week outside the monsoon. It is the fastest option, but in the monsoon timetable the same journey stretches to about ten hours and the train runs on fewer days, so check which timetable applies to your date.

The Konkan Kanya Express is the old favourite: board in the evening, wake up on the coast, and save a night's hotel. Its timing makes it popular, and it sells out early. Seats on both open 60 days ahead on IRCTC, the Indian Railways booking site, and for December and January it pays to book as early as you can.

Sleeper buses along NH-66 are the fallback when the trains are full: they leave Mumbai in the evening and reach the Goan bus stands, such as Panaji and Margao, in the morning. Local buses from there start at about six.

Flying: two airports at each end

Goa has two airports, and the choice is made by your beach, not the fare. Mopa (GOX) is in the north, the side of Arambol and Calangute; Dabolim (GOI) is in the south, the side of Margao and Palolem. The wrong one costs about two hours of road. Mumbai also has two airports now, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (BOM) and Navi Mumbai (NMI), an hour apart by road, so check both codes on the ticket. More on the Goa airports and which beach to choose.

Arriving in Goa

  • No Uber or Ola: they do not work in Goa, and anyone at a station or terminal offering an "Uber" is a tout. Use GoaMiles, the prepaid desk or the Kadamba buses.
  • Late arrivals cost more: after 22:00 transfers carry a surcharge of about ₹500, and the buses have stopped until six in the morning.
  • New Year fortnight: from mid-December to about 5 January transfers go up by 60–70% and scooters double; booking a week ahead keeps the price normal.
  • Scooter plans: a foreign licence is not enough; bring an International Driving Permit with category A, and wear a helmet. More on getting around Goa.
