Beaches in Goa: how to choose
Goa has more than fifty beaches along about 105 km of coast, and the choice comes down to one line on the map. North Goa is busy, social and loud after dark; South Goa is wider, slower and quieter, and gets emptier the further south you go. Pick the half first, then the beach; and whichever you choose, the sea is open for swimming only from November to March.

North Goa or South Goa
North Goa is where the state's beach reputation was made. [Calangute and Baga](/en/goa/calangute-and-baga/) are the biggest and most commercial beaches: crowded, loud, lined with shops, bars and water-sports stalls, full of Indian families on holiday, with good street food. [Anjuna](/en/goa/anjuna-beach/) has red cliffs, quiet swimming mornings and beach clubs that fill as the light goes, with the Wednesday flea market a short walk away. Its neighbour [Vagator](/en/goa/vagator-beach/) sits in two coves under the ruined Chapora fort, with the best sunset viewpoint on this stretch and the clubs people mean when they talk about Goa nightlife. Further up, Morjim and Ashwem are calmer, with good hotels and restaurants on the sand.
South Goa trades nightlife for space. Colva is one of Goa's oldest resorts, long and well equipped but without the late party scene. [Cavelossim](/en/goa/cavelossim/) feels resort-like and private, with expensive hotels. [Agonda](/en/goa/agonda/) is a long beach of bungalows and small cafes with no dense building. Palolem is South Goa's most popular beach, a pretty bay full of boats and waterfront cafes but no clubs. [Galgibaga](/en/goa/galgibaga/) has barely a hotel and long stretches of empty sand.

Beyond Goa
Past the Tiracol river, about fifteen minutes north of Arambol, the Maharashtra beaches around Vengurla run empty for kilometres, with nothing on them: bring water and shade.
Sea safety
From June to September the sea is closed: an official red-flag advisory bans swimming and water sports on Goa's beaches, and the shacks shut. In April, May and October the sea is often rough; swim only on calm days and read the water before going in. Butterfly Beach has no lifeguards, and its strip of sand shrinks to almost nothing at high tide, so check the tide before you go. At Cola the lagoon is easy to swim in but the open sea can pull hard. On the Maharashtra beaches tides and waves can be strong and there is no one to rescue you.
When to go to the beach
November to February is the beach season: dry, sunny days of 32–34 °C, a calm sea and every shack open. March is still good: dry, with the sea still open. Month-by-month details are on the [Goa weather](/en/goa/weather/) page.
